Experts call out Brisbane's sports infrastructure, signals need for major development
The city of 2.6 million people still relies on just one rectangular stadium, Suncorp Stadium, to serve four professional football teams and major concerts.

The Olympic budget for Brisbane 2032 is roughly $10 billion, while the business created is $1.2 trillion. This is equivalent to 120 times the cost of the actual event, which will only last a few weeks, whereas mortgages will remain for 30 years. Despite all these investments, Brisbane continues to remain in the spotlight. Even after cracking the bid for the hosting rights of the 2032 Olympics, the premier sporting city of Australia is gaining headlines. Experts call out the limited sports infrastructure in the city despite having almost 4 professional soccer teams.
“It wouldn’t be just for soccer. It’s insane that a city like Brisbane which has four professional teams in rectangular field codes has only one stadium within the city limits. And that stadium also hosts heaps of concerts. Also, don’t be so aggressive,” Vince Rugari, sports reporter for The Sydney Morning Herald wrote on his X.

Well, Rugari’s claims cannot be considered all untrue.
One stadium, multiple responsibilities
The city has an estimated population of around 2.6 million, reflecting a growth rate of around 1.23%–1.25% annually. As the third-most populous city of Australia and an increasing capex economy, Brisbane lacks major sports infrastructure. It has just one rectangular stadium, the Suncorp Stadium. Although it stands as one of the best stadiums and an infrastructural marvel of Australia, the city is far from upgrading to other games than cricket.
Suncorp is used for both sports and major concerts. Additionally, mandatory pitch and stadium maintenance due to the multi-purpose use of the stadium has led to significant fixture congestion at the site and dangerous playing conditions for athletes. These issues not only led to Brisbane not being able to host the Australia Cup final in October 2023, but also, due to concerts recently held at the venue, the pitch was in a seriously degraded condition during a Brisbane Roar double-header on 26 November 2023.
New stadium still under scrutiny
The Professional Footballers Association released a statement on 27 November 2023, calling the playing surface unacceptable and calling for swift action on the issue. Although the under-construction Vic Park stadium is expected to manage the concerts significantly at Suncorp, the project faces opposition due to environmental factors and indigenous heritage concerns
Victoria Park Stadium refers to the new, major multi-purpose stadium planned for Brisbane's Victoria Park, serving as the main venue for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, including the opening/closing ceremonies and athletics, with plans for AFL, cricket, and concerts in legacy. The cost of the project is $3.8 billion dollars and will manage stadium spectatorship for around 63,000 people.
