France v/s Northern Ireland: Former Champions Bounce Back in Style to Move Into the World Cup
France recovered from their shock defeat against Ivory Coast with a 3-1 victory over Northern Ireland, driven entirely by a spectacular hat-trick from Michael Olise

The French national side responded strongly to their shock defeat at the hands of the Ivory Coast by clinching a vital 3-1 win against Northern Ireland in their penultimate match before the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Yet, victory masked some enormous structural faults within the French team, which depended exclusively on the outstanding talent of Michael Olise to break through the stubborn Irish defence.
A Frustrating Start for the Superstars
The French team started aggressively, immediately on the front foot, creating early chances through Kylian Mbappé in the seventh minute and Désiré Doué in the eighth minute. The Northern Irish defence remained composed and were just about to punish the opposition soon thereafter. Following a superb buildup pass from Olise in the 14th minute, Mbappé surprisingly failed to capitalise on a chance to put the ball past the keeper one-on-one.
Les Bleus players became frustrated at this point. Adrien Rabiot attempted a speculative long-range effort that went high above the crossbar in the 18th minute. Soon afterwards, another wonderful move by Olise and Doué resulted in a shot being saved, but again, Mbappé managed to score on the rebound only for it to be adjudged as offside.
Olise Breaks the Deadlock
As the first half concluded, it could not have been any clearer that Michael Olise was in full control of the game. Winning himself the first-half MVP award, Olise created chances from France's high press.
The 42nd-minute saw the goalkeeping prowess of Mike Maignan launch an instant counterattack, which saw Doué pass the ball to Ousmane Dembélé. Although the Irish goalkeeper succeeded in stopping Dembélé’s first effort, Olise had already made himself available for the follow-up shot, giving France the early 1-0 lead. Even as time ran out on the half, there seemed to be an equaliser when Ruairi McConville found the back of the net only for it to be disallowed by the referee.
The Second-Half Surge and Irish Resilience
Clearly, none of the other players from the French team knew the secret of penetrating the remarkable defensive wall set up by their opponents from Northern Ireland, except, it seemed, for the unstoppable Olise. It took just three minutes after the half-time mark before Olise scored a wonderful brace, making it 2-0 (48').
The French stars, however, continued wasting their opportunities. Another golden one fell to Mbappé in the 56th minute when he hit an awful shot from Theo Hernández's perfect cross straight into the stand. Northern Ireland were able to take advantage of this wastefulness in the 63rd minute. Showing wonderful skills in counterattacks, Patrick Kelly finished a great pass from Shea Charles, bringing the score back to 2-1.
Refusing to let the match slip away, Olise delivered the final dagger in the 74th minute. Controlling the ball outside the box, he unleashed a stunning curling shot to complete his hat-trick and seal the 3-1 result.
The World Cup Question
While Northern Ireland leaves Lille with their heads held high following an exceptional tactical display, serious questions hover over the French camp.
Michael Olise was the undisputed heart of the attack, but the complete failure of megastars like Mbappé and Dembélé to properly support him is alarming. Having been crowned World Champions in 2018 and agonising runners-up in 2022, France possesses the pedigree to go all the way. But as they pack their bags for North America, the reality is stark: if their elite veterans continue to underperform, relying on a single playmaker might not be enough to regain football's ultimate prize.
Sportscape believes that even though France won today’s game, there a re alot of boxes needed to checked before they can be 100 percent prepared for the World Cup, but given the experience of the team, we hope they can overcome the hurdles and give the fans the best possible entertainment.
