France vs Ivory Coast: World Cup Favorites Thrown Into Turmoil After Stunning Warm-Up Defeat
France's World Cup preparations are thrown into turmoil after suffering a stunning 2-1 warm-up defeat against Ivory Coast, exposing sudden defensive vulnerabilities

Before the beginning of the game, the stakes were in the side of France. Everyone was ready for yet another French spectacle with players like Mbappe, Cherki, Ollise and reigning Ballon D’Or winner and UCL champion Dembele. After the game started, everything was going as expected, and France kept possession of the ball for the majority of the first half; to add to their happiness, Rayan Cherki scored an exceptional goal in stoppage time just before the half-time whistle. With this goal, the chances of France’s winning increased substantially, and everyone was excited to enter the pitch in the second half. But to everyone’s surprise, Ivory Coast’s goalkeeper, Yahia Fofana, started to turn the tide of the game. Even with good ball possession, France was finding it hard to put the ball past Fofana into the net, and players like Mbappe and Olise and even the the goal scoring Cherki was also suddenly looking clueless.
The missed opportunities caught up with the French team and soon the game started turning. 8 minutes into the second half, Ivory Coast’s Guela Doué found the back of the net and scoring the equaliser of his team with a great assist by Nicolas Pepe. But the real heartbreak came for France just before the final whistle and 6 minutes were remaining when Guela Doué sent an exceptional low cross to assist Amad Diallo to score which sealed the victory for Ivory Coast.
French manager Didier Deschamps had rested some key players who were worn out from the Champions League final, but even so, the loss highlights significant teamwork problems in the backup roster. For Deschamps, this tournament is a huge part of his legendary 14-year stint as it nears its end. Since France’s World Cup journey starts on June 16 against Senegal, Deschamps and his crew have just one last practice match against Northern Ireland to fix those defense woes.
Sportscape believes that France's surprising loss to Ivory Coast shows that even top teams can be defeated when the stakes are high and thus no one is to be set aside. If Didier Deschamps doesn't address the defence's clear weak spots now, they could face trouble in their upcoming group stage game. After all, they stumbled upon obvious vulnerabilities in Nantes.
