From Orange City to Sports Capital? CM Fadnavis, Nitin Gadkari Unveil Ambitious New Vision for Nagpur
CM Fadnavis, Nitin Gadkari unveil ambitious new vision for Nagpur sports infra development

As the week-long Khasdar Krida Mahotsav wrapped up in Nagpur on June 6, the event witnessed impressive participation from athletes across multiple disciplines, reflecting the growing sports culture in the orange city. The successful completion of the seven-day sports event was possible only because of improved sports infrastructure facilities in Nagpur.
Maharashtra Chief MinisterDevendra Fadnavis during his address at the closing ceremony, said “such events play a crucial role in building a strong base for budding athletes”. Along with competition, sports events like Khasdar Krida Mahotsav are creating new opportunities in the sports sector, he mentioned. Fadnavis also highlighted how sports infrastructure projects are helping Nagpur become a sports hub.
In recent times, sports infrastructure investment in Nagpur has received a boost with multiple projects lined up, including an international-standard sports complex at Manakpur and a probable sports university. According to Fadnavis, “these projects will ensure better training facilities within Nagpur, with added focus on building a strong culture around sports”.
With more youngsters taking up sports in India, the demand for better infrastructure, coaching facilities, and competitive platforms has also risen rapidly. As a result, the government is prioritising improving facilities and infrastructure development in the sports sector.
At the closing ceremony, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari expressed ambitions to expand the tournament further to cover the entire Vidarbha region, with expected participation of over one lakh athletes in upcoming editions. He also mentioned the efforts to improve basic facilities like swimming pools and local-level infrastructure.
Raksha Khadse, Union Minister of State, advocated that “the coming decade would determine the future of Indian sports, especially keeping in mind India’s long-term plans to host international events like the 2036 Olympics”. Strengthening Nagpur’s sports infrastructure, Khadse said that the city will receive ₹45 crore in funding to build district-level projects to improve facilities.
Sportscape believes that increasing investment in sports infrastructure in India is changing the sports culture in the country, encouraging youngsters to take up sports. Multi-sports events like Khasdar Krida Mahotsav could make space for other disciplines to create more opportunities and bring overall balance in the sports ecosystem in the country.
