India T20 Squad: A New Dawn in Indian T20 Cricket as India gets New Captain and a Wonderkid
The BCCI has announced Shreyas Iyer as the new T20I captain of India, while 15-year-old wonderkid Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has earned his historic maiden call-up for the upcoming tours.

As soon as the Indian Premier League got over, everyone had only one thing in mind: what will be the upcoming Indian T20 Cricket Men’s squad for the Ireland and England series and then the Men’s Asian Games 2026. Will there be a new captain, or is Suryakumar Yadav, the latest World Cup-winning skipper of India, going to retain his position? And what other changes can we see based on the IPL? To answer all these queries, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has formally announced the teams for the upcoming series and the Asian Games in a press conference today.
The announcement soon caught the headlines as the rumours came true, and Suryakumar Yadav has been dropped both as captain and as a player from the India Men’s T20 squad and is replaced by newly appointed captain Shreyas Iyer. Iyer, who is making a comeback to the T20 team after nearly two years, is handed the captaincy after he has consistently performed well as captain in some of the recent editions of the IPL. But the captain isn’t the only leadership change that happened in the team. Axar Patel has also been relieved of his vice-captaincy duties; it has been passed on to Tilak Varma, although Patel is named in the 16-man squad for both the bilateral series and the 15-man squad for the Men’s Asian Games 2026.
The leadership change has already caught headlines, but the more exciting news from the press conference was the inclusion of the 15-year-old wonderkid from Bihar, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, into the squad. The batter has been consistently performing since the last IPL and has broken almost all the records in this year's edition, winning the Orange Cap for most runs, player with the highest strike rate, player to hit the most sixes, MVP and a lot more. BCCI Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar and BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia took a very bold decision in calling up the batter, and they have put huge faith in his batting performance.
Apart from these, Md Siraj and Ravi Bishnoi are included in the 16-man squad in place of Jasprit Bumrah and Kuldeep Yadav, respectively, in the bilateral series, but Bumrah makes a comeback for the Men’s Asian Games. Harshit Rana also makes a comeback after he missed the entire IPL 2026 season due to an injury.
Sportscape believes that overall this team looks very promising, especially after seeing the selected members’ performances in the IPL this season, but it will be exciting to see how the team performs under the new leadership and whether Shreyas Iyer can fill the shoes of Suryakumar Yadav as captain.
