Tajikistan vs India: Major Blow for Blue Tigers as Ryan Williams Is Ruled Out Resulting in Yet Another Defeat
The Indian Football Men's Team received another crushing defeat now at the hands of Tajikistan continuing their losing streak after getting defeated by Jamaica and Zimbabwe

Indian football is way past its former glory, and now it is again trying to put itself back on the world football map, which it is again finding hard to achieve. After failing to qualify for the FIFA World Cup 2026, the heartbreak didn’t stop there. India faced their third consecutive international loss yesterday to Tajikistan in an International Friendly played at the Talco Arena in Tursunzoda. Before this match, India lost to Jamaica and Zimbabwe in the Unity Cup, which made them slip to the 137th position in the FIFA World Ranking.
The shocker came when the Blue Tiger’s head coach, Khalid Jamil announced the 22 member squad to face the 103rd ranked Tajikistan in the two upcoming India vs Tajikistan friendlies that missed a major name was Ryan Williams who was replaced by forward Parthib Gogoi. Williams recently received his Indian passport after leaving the Australian citizenship to play for India and it seemed a match in heaven. Technique, speed, dribbling, he can do it all but losing him at a crucial juncture where India needed a win at any cost was a very hard blow to the Tigers. Veteran players like goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu and defender Sandhesh Jhingan were also named as part of the team but they couldn’t help the team end their losing streak.
The Tajikistan players were looking comfortable from the very beginning of the match even though they were playing under a new coach in Igor Angelovski who succeeded Serbia’s Goran Stevanovic. The team went ahead in the game in the first 10 minutes of the game when Indian midfielder Louis Nickson committed a foul in the penalty area costing the blue tigers as Sheriddin Boboev converted it from the spot that was completely missed by Indian skipper and goalkeeper Sandhu. However India had a golden opportunity to equalise through Lallianzuala Chhangte in the 41st minute after Akash Mishra delivered a good cross to find the winger in a dangerous position in the Tajikistan box. His header, however, went straight to the keeper. With Ryan Williams missing out of the match, Indian forwards Chhangte and Vikram Pratam Singh despite heavy running were looking clueless in the match.
Going into the second half, the Tajikistan team maintained their position even scoring again at the one hour mark courtesy to an exceptional goal by Mekhrubon Karimov, who headed in from a free-kick and to further extend this scoring Ehsoni Panshanbe increased their lead, this time from open play just minutes later basically sealing the game. For the Blue TIgers, Farukh Choudhary grabbed a late consolation goal after slotting in a low driven free-kick into the bottom left corner. But the final scoreline was still precariously placed at 3-1 for the hosts. Leaving a lot of questions for the future of football in India.
Sportscape believes that Indian football is at a very sensitive position right now, and this has been the case for the past few years. Despite having top players, the team is finding it difficult to perform at the big stages, but we also believe that once the correct assessment is done and the mistakes are properly identified, this team can do wonders on the pitch.
