A Grand Return! Erling Haaland's Brace Powers Norway Past Iraq in an Emphatic World Cup Comeback
Norway and Iraq both made their long-awaited returns to the FIFA World Cup, but it was Erling Haaland and Martin Ødegaard who stole the show in a dominant 4-1 victory.

The reason for this was because both nations entered into Boston Stadium having had several years of expectation to live up to. This is because Norway, on their behalf, was playing in its first FIFA World Cup in ten years, while Iraq was making one of its greatest returns in FIFA history. Unfortunately for them, however, it was Norway that came through under the pressure of Group I.
Haaland and Ødegaard: A Class Above
The comeback of Norway was led by their golden generation, and they were on point. Their new star Erling Haaland scored in his World Cup debut. The striker was once again outstanding, scoring twice in the first half with his deadly combination of power and sharpness. He first scored in the 29th minute for the opening goal, then he scored his second in the 43rd minute when he took advantage of their mistake.
However, although it was Haaland who provided the finishing blow, the one pulling the strings was the captain. The master class display of Martin Odegaard in the midfield was too much. The Arsenal star controlled the pace easily with his intelligent passing, making sure everyone knew that he has recovered from any fitness worries before the tournament.
A Mixed Night for Aymen Hussein
Even amid the mounting pressure, the Iraqis had their moments of being genuinely dangerous. This was exemplified by Iraq's talismanic striker, Aymen Hussein, who brought joyous relief to his fans when he scored a header beyond the Norwegian goalkeeper in the 39th minute, leveling the score temporarily.
However, Hussein’s night would not have the sweetest of endings. Following Leo Østigård’s header in the 76th minute that added another goal to Norway’s name, Hussein scored an own goal at the death to make it 4-1 at full-time.
Sportscape believes that while Iraq can boast of making it to the World Cup and scoring a goal, it was certainly Norway's night. In a huge statement of intent for what is to come in FIFA 2026, Norway showed that the Lions are back. With Erling Haaland and Martin Ødegaard leading the charge, Norway certainly seem to be one to watch out for in the coming years.
