Greece vs Italy: Pio Esposito Ignites Italy’s New Era as Baldini’s Young Guns Conquer Greece
Following their historic World Cup absence, a youthful 10-man Italy squad managed by Silvio Baldini secured a gritty 1-0 friendly victory over Greece.

World champions in 2006 and then missing on three consecutive FIFA World Cups, this is the tragic story of the Italian national team. The world was shocked when Italy failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup, but in 2026, they are yet again out of the edition, making them the only former champions to miss three consecutive editions.
While the nation reeled from yet another qualification failure, the manager opted for a radical rebuild to bounce back and prepare for the future. While qualified nations use these friendlies as World Cup warm-ups, Italy was forced to test its youth depth for the future, and the friendly against Greece was a stepping stone for it.
Italian team manager Silvio Baldini took a very important and tough decision to form a team completely devoid of superstars and only with young, hungry and talented players. The only senior team member present was their goalkeeper, Gianluigi Donnarumma.
The match began on a very positive note, with both teams giving their all for the fans and to prove their valour, but in the 18th minute of the game, Italy went ahead with a goal by Pio Esposito, assisted by J.Ekhator. The scoreline remained 1-0 at halftime in favour of the Italians.
As the second half began, Greece tried to create chances to equalise, so did Italy to extend their lead, but all were for nothing. In the 68th minute, Luca Reggiani was shown a straight red card, reducing Italy to 10 men.
Even with 10 players, Italy was able to hold off the Greek players and managed to win the match 1-0, with Donnarumma claiming yet another clean sheet performance.
Italy returns to competitive football in September in the UEFA Nations League, and the fans are hoping for a much more competitive and hungry Italian side for the future
Sportscape believes that Italy has the quality and the talent to represent their country at the biggest stage, but every time they get lost at the very last moment. We believe Italy can bounce back stronger, and we can see the former champions competing once again for the ultimate glory.
