Kargil Carves a New Identity as Ladakh’s Sustainable Winter Sports Frontier
Moving beyond traditional infrastructure-heavy models, Kargil is emerging as a sustainable winter sports hub by leveraging its natural terrain.

Sometimes, sports infrastructure is not about building marvelous stadiums or rinks but rather about using the natural resources to conduct games in the most sustainable way. After the Leh-based 6th Khelo IndiaWinter Games, Ladakh is now welcoming competitors for a ski challenge.
Kargil is now set to change its reputation of being the ground for the Kargil war into emerging as a major winter sports hub. The first state open snow ski championship, 2025-26, was inaugurated at the Yakuza Ski Slope in Umba Yarzah, Sankoo, Kargil. The heavenly slope served as a natural base for 91 athletes to showcase their talents.
