Sustainable Turnaround as Lucknow Converts Hazardous Waterbody into Modern Sports Hub
In a remarkable example of sustainable urban transformation, a stagnant, mosquito-infested waterbody at Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Park has been redeveloped into a vibrant sports complex by the Lucknow Development Authority

How many of us have found peas in ice cream containers, thanks to our lovely mothers from whom we have learned the value of reusing our limited resources to promote sustainability?
A unique reusage transformation was observed at Lucknow's Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Park, where a stagnant and mosquito-infected water body was upgraded to a modern sports hub.
The Lucknow development authority carried out a major makeover of the health hazard into quality infrastructure for sports accessibility.Chief Secretary SP Goyal inaugurated the newly constructed social benefactor along with divisional commissioner Vijay Vishwas Pant, district magistrate Vishakh G., and LDA vice chairman Prathamesh Kumar.
The officials highlighted the utility behind the area selection for the tiled base of the former stagnant water structure, making it non-permeable for water, thereby rendering it useful for infrastructural activities only. The project forms a piece to the CM Yogi Adityanath's grand plan of the "Village to stadium" initiative discussed at the TOISA 2025.

A deep dive into the stagnant water transformation
The estimated cost of the project is ₹7 crore, with its primary vision being making affordable sports services available at the regional levels. The complex shall constitute diverse sports facilities, including a skating rink, lawn tennis court, box cricket arena, badminton court, and pickleball facilities. This shall be Lucknow's first skating Park making it all the more special.
Spread over an approximate 4000-4500 acres, this welfare sports hub has already started to become an athletes' hub for the youth. A footfall of 2000 visitors is already being welcomed at the complex, which highlights the relevance of the area selection further.“The site had turned into a mosquito breeding ground and posed a health risk. It was not serving any purpose. We converted it into a productive public space,” said a senior LDA official. Among other noteworthy sports infrastructure construction, the mini sports arena near Gwari flyover deserves a mention for its all inclusive approach.
