World Athletics Delegation Reviews Gujarat’s Readiness for 2031 Championships Bid
The World Athletics delegation visited Gujarat to inspect sports infrastructure as the state pushes its bid for the 2031 World Athletics Championships.

A five-member World Athletics delegation visited Gujarat as part of their bid to host the World Athletics Championships2031 and the World Athletics U20 Championships2028 to assess the state’s sports infrastructure and preparedness. The visit demonstrates the state’s ambition to be a global destination for major athletics events.
The two-day visit began with the delegation’s meetings in Gandhinagar with Chief Minister Bhupendra Pateland Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi and was led by Bid Evaluation Panel Chair Antti Pihlakoski.
Gujarat Pushes Global Sports Infrastructure Vision
The Government of Gujarat was optimistic that this delegation would assist with their understanding of the State’s sports ecosystem and infrastructure.
The state government expressed that they would be pleased to host the 2031 World Athletics Championships and that they had increased their state’s infrastructure preparedness to support this bid. This visit is one of a number of site visits within the structured evaluation process that assesses the state’s capability to host large scale, international sporting events.
State Event Venues and Infrastructure Readiness
Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi described Gujarat as being capable of hosting a number of global competitions, including the World Police and Fire Games and Commonwealth Games 2030.
He noted the rapid development of the Veer Savarkar Sports Complex, Sardar Patel Sports Enclave, the Narendra Modi Stadium, and the Karai Academy, with all being designed as major venues for global competitions.

Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel said: “The delegation will be able to observe, and gain first hand knowledge of, the state of Gujarat’s preparedness and its sports culture during their inspection of the sports infrastructure in the state.”
He added, “The government is optimistic about getting the hosting rights for the 2031 World Athletics Championships and is working on preparations.”
