Bukhungu Stadium Upgrade To Boost Western Kenya’s Football Ecosystem
Kenya is all set to unveil its developmental blueprint for its bid to host the upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) along with Uganda and Tanzania.

Kenya is all set to unveil its developmental blueprint for its bid to host the upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) along with Uganda and Tanzania. Initiatives like the Nairobi-based Atlanta sports city with a seating capacity of 60,000, along with 25 new stadium constructions and 30 football academies. Refurbishment trends have also been highlighted in stadium projects like Kasarani Stadium.
Along similar lines, the Kakamega-based Bukhungu Stadium is being revamped into a FIFA-compliant facility with an increased seating capacity of 30,000 spectators. A thorough inspection was carried out by the members of the County Executive, led by the Chief Officer for Sports, Youth and Library Services, Mr Lawrence Mukoyani. The project is being guided under the county government of Kakamega in a two-phased transition model. The projected completion of the endeavour is June 2026, with 50% of the project completed.
We have agreed with the contractor on an accelerated programme to meet our target. The county has committed additional funds to ensure construction remains on track,” Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa said.
Kakamega County has committed KSh600 million to the Bukhungu Stadium upgrade, demonstrating its dedication to strengthening sports infrastructure and youth development opportunities.

Modernisation blueprint including capacity and progress
Phase 1 of the project constituted a 200-seating-capacity parking area, doping control rooms and VIP stands worth KES875 million.
Phase 2 of the project, estimated to cost around KES 400 million, shall include the construction of a surrounding terrace, gymnasium, dispensary and segregation of administrative offices
Further, the governor expressed his satisfaction with the phase 3 C-section terracing reaching completion, with modern canopy-style roofing system installation to commence soon.
