Historic Hat-trick and Heartbreak! Canada Obliterate Nine-Man Qatar 6-0 to Secure First-Ever World Cup Win
Canada crushed nine-man Qatar 6-0 in a dramatic FIFA 2026 World Cup Group B clash. Jonathan David scored a historic hat-trick, but the win was marred by a serious injury to Ismael Koné.

The energy in BC Place was completely charged up due to the hosts, Canada, getting an outstanding win, beating the opponents, Qatar, by an impressive margin of 6-0 and winning their very first game at the FIFA 2026 World Cup Finals. Although the score is quite revealing of an attacking masterpiece, this Group B match was one of ups and downs with a hat-trick, red cards, and a terrible injury.
A Historic Start and David's Brilliance
The team came out of the blocks with tremendous speed. Cyle Larin was truly the hero for such a game. He scored Canada’s first goal in the 16th minute by converting a rebound and finding the back of the net for the second game running.
Nonetheless, this game will always belong to striker Jonathan David (J David). David played some lethal football by scoring an outstanding hat-trick which mesmerised the crowd in Vancouver. J David’s impressive treble is the second hat-trick at the 2026 World Cup, and it is only equal to the one scored by the legendary Lionel Messi against Algeria.
For Qatar, things got worse from thereon. Homam Ahmed received his marching orders in the 33rd minute through a direct red card after a VAR decision for stopping a clear goal-scoring opportunity against Tajon Buchanan.
Tragedy Strikes for Ismaël Koné
The jovial atmosphere inside the stadium was abruptly and shockingly interrupted right at the start of the second half. In the 51st minute, Assim Madibo, a midfielder with the Qatari side, made an awful tackle from behind against Ismaël Koné, who is also a midfielder for Canada.
Koné fell in sheer pain, his left leg in agony. It was clear what was going on, and medical help was immediately provided. Koné was taken off the field on a stretcher on oxygen and with waves to the concerned fans. After reviewing through VAR, it became clear that Madibo deserved a red card for his earlier yellow card.
A Beautiful Tribute and the Path Ahead
It was total ruthlessness on the part of Canada when dealing with the weakened Qatari team. Substitute Nathan Saliba, who came on the pitch to take the place of the injured Koné, delivered a brilliant free-kick to increase the tally to 4-0 for Canada. It was indeed a lovely moment of class from Saliba, who scored the goal for his team and then ran to the touchline where he picked the jersey of his injured teammate wearing number eight and showed it to the applauding crowd.
An own goal resulting from a powerful strike which got deflected by Mohamed Manai and David’s stoppage time goal completed the sensational 6-0 victory.
In the coming matches, things would get interesting for Group B. Canada now have four points and only need a draw from their next match against Switzerland to be comfortably placed at the first spot for the Round of 32. As for Qatar, they have some difficult things ahead of them. They need a big win in their last game against Bosnia and Herzegovina to have any hope of qualifying through the third spot.
Sportscape would like to reiterate that while the entire nation celebrates a historic triumph, the thoughts of every fan and player remain entirely with Ismaël Koné, hoping for his speedy and complete recovery.
