Atalanta Midfielder Ederson Called Up by Brazil to Replace Injured Wesley in World Cup Squad
Brazil manager Carlo Ancelotti has called up Atalanta midfielder Ederson to replace the injured Wesley just days before the Seleção’s 2026 FIFA World Cup opener

The five-time FIFA World Cup winners have suffered a huge setback on Sunday when, during a friendly against Mo Salah’s Egypt, midfielder Wesley sustained an injury within the first 30 minutes of the game. As a precautionary measure, he was substituted out, but further scans revealed the injury is serious and thus Wesley can’t be a part of the Brazilian squad.
As the quick response from the coach goes, Carlo Ancelotti, the Brazilian manager, has summoned talented Atalanta midfielder Ederson to replace the injured Wesley in the squad.
A Cruel Setback for Wesley
The injury was an absolute shock for the midfielder as he was very successful for AS Roma this season and also for Brazil, and that’s why Ancelotti called up the player to the squad. Even though the Brazilian Football Federation (CBF) hasn’t provided any details on the extent of the player’s injury, the doctors have confirmed that it is practically impossible for Wesley to participate in the tournament.
This loss for Ancelotti certainly demands some tactical changes, though it doesn't seem like the seasoned Italian manager had to think much about replacing Wesley.
Ederson’s Deserved Lifeline
Ederson, however, knows that the misery of one athlete represents an immense chance for him. The midfielder has shone in the Italian league, carving out a reputation as one of the hard-working motors of Atalanta’s midfield.
Ederson is well known for his excellent recovery numbers, tactical awareness, and ability to quickly move from the defensive to attacking zone. The Brazilian player is an aggressive athlete who adds strength to the national team lineup. The player’s excellent form on the club level has not remained unnoticed in other parts of Europe. Manchester United are reportedly interested in his services.
What This Means for Ancelotti's Midfield
Whereas Wesley was full of flair and skilful passing ability, Ederson would certainly provide the Italian manager with solid defence from the midfield position. It is no secret that in major tournaments like the World Cup, a midfielder who can disrupt the play of the opposing side and shield the back defence is extremely useful.
It is anticipated that Ederson will arrive at the Brazilian team's camp in the next 24 hours in preparation for the game. Ederson will be playing alongside such brilliant players as Bruno Guimarães and Lucas Paquetá, meaning that even after sustaining this injury, the Seleção remains strong as they set out on their journey to their record sixth World Cup star.
Sportscape believes that the injury sustained by Wesley is truly heartbreaking given that the player has again and again proved his capabilities to be in the World Cup squad, but no one can go against destiny. We wish Ederson the very best for the upcoming World Cup and wish Wesley for a speedy recovery .
