Three Lions Roar! England Survive First-Half Chaos to Outclass Croatia 4-2 in Thrilling World Cup Opener
England beat Croatia 4-2 in an entertaining Group L opening clash at the FIFA 2026 World Cup, courtesy of a Harry Kane brace and second-half goals from Jude Bellingham and Marcus Rashford.

Without doubt, the anticipated clash between European powerhouses did not disappoint in any way. In what can only be described as an intense and spectacular start to the FIFA 2026 World Cup Group L campaign,England, led by Thomas Tuchel, managed to defeat Croatia by a scoreline of 4-2.
Given that both sides were expected to advance far in the tournament, there is no doubt that the game was anticipated as a true test of their title ambitions. In the end, England demonstrated that they are capable of defeating any other side in terms of scoring goals.
First Half Chaos: Kane's Brace and Croatian Screamers
The game started with great pace and saw two evenly matched sides play from the outset. The deadlock was finally broken in the 12th minute after a somewhat dubious turn of events. A foul against Noni Madueke in the box by Luka Modric led to the penalty for England’s captain Harry Kane. His first penalty attempt was superbly saved by Croatia's goalkeeper, Dominik Livakovic. However, the Video Assistant Referee took control right away, revealing that the keeper came off his line before the penalty, while the defender Josko Gvardiol entered the box unlawfully. With another chance at hand, Kane scored from the same corner to make it 1-0.
Croatia did not give in. In the 36th minute, they managed to tie the score with an amazing goal from Martin Baturina, who hit a stunning shot from distance.
The frantic seesawing went on for a while longer. In the 42nd minute, Kane scored the second of two goals for England with a header after a corner from Declan Rice. But, just before halftime, Croatia got their equaliser through yet another moment of sheer brilliance. Veteran Ivan Perisic flicked a ball to striker Petar Musa, who scored with an explosive strike that put the two teams level at 2-2 as half-time came to an end.
Bellingham and Rashford Seal the Deal
Whereas the first half saw an evenly-contested battle between the two teams, the second half saw England take the lead.
Just one minute into the second half (47'), the Three Lions scored once again. The ball was played to Jude Bellingham, who made a run towards the box and coolly placed the ball across the goalpost, scoring for England and giving them a 3-2 lead. This goal came as a big blow to Croatia.
Though Croatia brought on fresh legs in the midfield, they could not manage to get an answer to England’s new approach in terms of defence. In the dying minutes of the match, Tuchel decided to bring in Marcus Rashford as a substitute for Anthony Gordon. This move proved to be very successful, and at the 85th-minute mark, Rashford calmly scored after exchanging passes with Bukayo Saka.
Sportscape feels that despite the lessons that have been learnt defensively, England has clearly played better football and dominated the dangerous Croatian team in the second half of the match. This is a clear indication that the Lions are here for the tournament to make a statement, and it’s time to see where they go from here as they seek their maiden World Cup title.
