This match is another international fixture as It also marks the beginning of a new phase for Indian Test cricket under Shubman Gill, the new Test captain of India. The BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India, the governing body for cricket in India) has announced a 14-member squad for this match, with KL Rahul named as vice-captain, replacing Rishabh Pant in that leadership role.
At the same time, several senior players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, Ravindra Jadeja, and Ravichandran Ashwin are not part of the squad. So this clearly shows a transition phase where India is moving towards a younger Test team.
Mullanpur, officially the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium, will also host its first-ever Test match. This adds a historic moment for the venue as well.
Even though the series includes Test matches and three One Day Internationals, ODIs 50-over matches are played per side, the BCCI sees it as a very important preparation step for India's busy international schedule ahead. Afghanistan officially represented by ACB, Afghanistan Cricket Board, the governing body for cricket in Afghanistan, which is going to enter this series as a more experienced side compared to 2018.
Meanwhile, India is managing player workload with Jaspreet Bumrah rested as part of workload management and expected to return later for the England tour.
Sportscape feelsthat this Test match is not only about winning or losing, but it also ultimately builds the identity for the Indian cricket team. Shubman Gill, who performed strongly as a captain in 2025 and recently entered the World Cup trophy series, is now being seen as a leader of the new generation, especially as they are pulling the youngsters in the team. So it is very evident and aspiring. So Mulanpur's first Test is more than just a venue milestone. It represents the beginning of a new direction for the Indian cricket team, where younger players are being given more responsibility to shape the future of the team in upcoming years.
