Meghalaya accelerates sports infrastructure with Kiang Nangbah Stadium upgrade, featuring new turf, track, and seating facilities to boost athlete training and regional sports growth.

Meghalaya is accelerating its sports infrastructure push as Sports & Youth Affairs Minister Wailadmiki Shylla inspected the ongoing renovation work at Kiang Nangbah Stadium, underlining the state’s commitment to modernising facilities for athletes and upcoming sporting events.
During the visit, the minister stressed that quality infrastructure is critical to strengthening training ecosystems and boosting participation, particularly in regions with strong grassroots sporting culture. Officials from the district administration, Public Works Department, and local sports bodies briefed him on the progress, signalling a coordinated effort to fast-track the project.
The initiative reflects a broader strategy where regional stadiums are being upgraded to meet competitive standards, ensuring athletes have access to structured and well-equipped training environments.
Stadium Upgrade in Focus: Turf, Track & Spectator Facilities Get a Makeover
The redevelopment of Kiang Nangbah Stadium is centred around key performance and spectator upgrades, aimed at transforming it into a modern multi-sport venue.
Planned enhancements include:
- Installation of artificial turf for high-quality playing conditions
- Development of a modern athletic track to support training and competitions
- Expansion of the seating gallery to improve spectator experience
Notably, these upgrades will be supported through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, highlighting a collaborative model where private participation complements government efforts in sports infrastructure development.
Driving Grassroots Sports Through Infrastructure Investment
Minister Shylla reiterated that such projects are essential to unlocking local talent and creating pathways for athletes to compete at higher levels.
With stakeholders including District Sports Officer K. Passah and representatives from the West Jaiñtia District Sports Association involved in the process, the project is being positioned as a community-driven sports development effort.
As renovation work progresses, Kiang Nangbah Stadium is set to emerge as a key sporting hub in Meghalaya — reinforcing the idea that infrastructure remains the backbone of long-term sports growth in the region.
