Meghalaya bets ₹1,800 crore on sports infrastructure ahead of 2027 National Games
At the Meghalaya Sports Conclave 2026, the state presented its massive bid to develop sports infrastructure ahead of 39th National Games 2027.

On Tuesday, at the closing ceremony of the Meghalaya Sports Conclave 2026, the state's ₹1,800 crore bet on sports infrastructure was the central point of discussion. As the Northeast prepares to host the 39th National Games in 2027, the state clearly stated that stadiums, indoor arenas and talent systems are being constructed to last beyond the national games.
The Department of Sports & Youth Affairs organised the conclave to provide a common platform for Olympic medallists, athletes, policymakers and sports experts to discuss governance, digital transformation and athlete development.
Meghalaya's Sports Infrastructure bet
Total sports infrastructure investment in Meghalaya has reached the ₹1,800 crore mark. A ₹132 crore Integrated Multipurpose Indoor Sports Complex has been recently inaugurated, reflecting growing facilities for indoor disciplines.
Ahead of the 39th National Games in 2027, he JN Sports Complex and PA Sangma Integrated Sports Complex are undergoing redevelopment work to enhance training and competition facilities.
Another landmark infrastructural investment by Meghalaya is the flagship ₹732 crore Mawkhanu Football Stadium, expected to become India’s first football stadium built entirely to match FIFA and AFC standards with a seating capacity of 40,000 spectators.
All about the Meghalaya Sports Conclave 2026
The first thematic session on Transforming India’s Sports Governance was attended by Olympic champions Manu Bhaker and P.R. Sreejesh and other governance experts. The panellists stressed building policies to develop inclusive ecosystems at the grassroots level. Commissioner & Secretary Dr Vijay Kumar highlighted the application of the community-based approach to sports.
The second session on Innovation and Digital Transformation in Sports looked at the growing role of technology and data analytics in redefining performance monitoring. The session was attended by World Athletics Vice President Dr Adille Sumariwalla, Go Sports Foundation Board Member Deepthi Bopaiah, Olympic champion Abhinav Bindra and RevSportz founder Boria Majumdar.
Holistic Development for a Sustainable Sporting Future was the theme for the final session, where Chief Secretary Dr. Shakil P. Ahammed coversed with Manu Bhaker, Hima Das, Sheetal Devi, Harvinder Singh and P.R. Sreejesh. The athletes discussed about the role of institutions, federations and overall infrastructure in their sports journey.
