Mexico vs South Africa: Azteca Absolute Dominance as Quiñones and Jiménez Power Mexico to Historic 2-0 Opening Match Victory over South Africa
Co-hosts Mexico kicked off the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a masterclass performance, defeating a short-handed South Africa 2-0 at a roaring Estadio Azteca.

The FIFA World Cup 2026 kicked off amid much excitement when the co-hosts of the tournament, Mexico, won their opening match against South Africa by beating them 2-0 in a highly tempestuous game played in the famous Estadio Azteca. It was a fantastic performance put up by the Mexican team, especially that of Julián Quiñones.
First-Half Blitz: Quiñones Ignites the Azteca
Mexico went out of their way to be aggressive in the first minute. After only 4 minutes, Raúl Jiménez made an impressive save by South African goalkeeper Ronwen Williams after an accurate cross. However, Williams would soon switch roles as he went from being a hero to a villain. In the 8th minute, a careless pass by the goalkeeper put pressure on his team's defence. Álvaro Fidalgo took advantage of the situation as he intercepted the ball to set up Julián Quiñones, who scored from outside the box to take the lead 1-0.
The Mexicans maintained dominance throughout the match as they applied immense pressure to their opponents using the high press strategy. Quiñones almost got another goal in the 19th minute through a powerful shot that just hit the crossbar, while a little later in the 42nd minute, it was the post that denied him. South Africa could not move the ball and received an early warning card due to Teboho Mokoena's dangerous tackle against Fidalgo. Mexico led 1-0 at half-time.
Second-Half Drama: Cards and History Made
Disciplinary issues arose within the match from the start of the second half. On the 49th-minute mark, Jiménez made a spectacular halfway line pass to allow Brian Gutiérrez one-on-one with Sithole inside the box. Unfortunately, Sithole brought him down and got the first red card of the match.
Capitalising on their numerical advantage, the Mexicans scored the decisive goal on the 66th minute mark after Jiménez found the back of the net with a spectacular finish of a superb cross, extending their lead to 2-0. This particular goal had some historical significance, as it placed Jiménez as the joint second-best all-time goalscorer for the Mexicans.
The frustrations of the away side reached a boiling point as Nkosinathi Sibisi got shown his yellow card on the 68th-minute mark due to an elbow to Quiñones. Then, after another VAR review, Themba Zwane was sent off directly for an offence he committed in the 83rd minute of play. This left the South Africans with just 9 players on the pitch. In the last seconds of stoppage time (90 + 2'), Montes of the Mexicans got his direct red card after fouling Khuliso Mudau.
Sportscape feels that we know that this spectacular opening occurred exactly sixteen years to the day since these two countries played in the opening game of the World Cup of 2010. Although this memory makes one reminisce about the nostalgia associated with the match, it should be noted that the famous 2010 game did not result in a win for South Africa, but ended in a score of 1-1. We feel South Africa also has a strong team, and it's a long tournament to judge any results so soon.
