Mohammad Kaif Reveals Gautam Gambhir Preferred Ishan Kishan Over KL Rahul During Selection Debate
Former India batter Mohammad Kaif says Gautam Gambhir backed Ishan Kishan while KL Rahul faced scrutiny over his place in the side.

Former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif has said that Gautam Gambhir preferred Ishan Kishan over KL Rahul during a phase when India’s team selection, particularly in the wicketkeeper-batter role, was under significant discussion. Kaif’s remarks revisit a period when Rahul’s performances and position on the Indian side were being closely analysed by fans and experts. According to Kaif, Gambhir consistently viewed Kishan as the stronger option in the setup.
Kaif Recalls Selection Debate
Speaking about the selection dynamics, Kaif said Gambhir openly backed Kishan and believed the left-handed batter offered greater attacking intent at the top and in the middle order. Kaif noted that Rahul came under sustained criticism during that period, with several former cricketers questioning his strike rate and overall impact in white-ball cricket. He added that despite the criticism, he remained among the few former players who publicly supported Rahul, arguing that the batter’s experience and adaptability remained valuable for India.
KL Rahul vs Ishan Kishan (ODIs)
KL Rahul has scored more than 3,000 runs in ODIs, averaging close to 49, with seven centuries and 18 half-centuries, underlining his consistency in India’s middle order. In comparison, Ishan Kishan has scored over 900 ODI runs at an average of around 42, while maintaining a strike rate above 100, highlighting his aggressive batting approach. Kishan also holds the distinction of being the youngest Indian to score an ODI double century, after his explosive 210 against Bangladesh in 2022. While Rahul’s ODI strike rate remains around 89, Kishan scores at over 100, reflecting the contrast between Rahul’s stability and Kishan’s attacking intent.
Rahul Faced Heavy Scrutiny
Rahul’s place in the side became a recurring topic as India experimented with combinations ahead of major ICC tournaments. His role as both a top-order batter and wicketkeeper added complexity to the debate. Critics questioned whether Rahul’s measured approach aligned with India’s evolving aggressive batting strategy, particularly in T20 cricket. Supporters, however, pointed to Rahul’s consistency across formats and his ability to stabilise innings under pressure.
Kishan’s Rise Added Competition
Kishan’s emergence intensified competition for limited spots in India’s batting unit. His aggressive strokeplay and ability to accelerate quickly made him a strong contender in white-ball formats. The competition between Rahul and Kishan reflected a broader transition within Indian cricket, where selectors increasingly prioritised flexibility and attacking intent. Kaif’s comments offer fresh insight into internal cricketing opinions during that phase, highlighting the differing views among former players over India’s ideal batting combination.
