Rishabh Pant Set For Delhi Capitals Return As KL Rahul’s Future Comes Under Spotlight
A proposed trade with Lucknow Super Giants could bring Pant back to Delhi, while questions grow over KL Rahul’s place in the squad.

Rishabh Pant is set for a return to Delhi Capitals ahead of the 2027 Indian Premier League season, with a trade deal involving spinner Kuldeep Yadav. According to reports, the paperwork for the trade has been submitted to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). But with Pant moving back to the franchise where he spent the first nine seasons of his IPL career, one name lingers under scrutiny: KL Rahul.
Pant's homecoming
Pant, who joined Lucknow Super Giants for ₹27 crore ahead of IPL 2026, endured a difficult campaign. The wicketkeeper-batter scored 312 runs during the season as LSG finished bottom of the points table. He also stepped down as captain after the season, ending a challenging year for both player and franchise. Pant previously represented Delhi Capitals from 2016 to 2024, playing 111 matches and emerging as one of the team’s key players. He also captained the side in 43 matches across three seasons before being released ahead of the 2025 mega auction.
KL Rahul’s Position Under Discussion
Pant’s possible return has raised questions about the future of KL Rahul at the Delhi Capitals. Former India pacer Dodda Ganesh even said Rahul should consider entering the auction if Pant rejoins the franchise. “KL Rahul should ask for release and go to the auction if Pant comes back,” Ganesh wrote on X.
Rahul was among Delhi’s standout performers in IPL 2026. He scored 593 runs in 14 matches at a strike rate of 174.41, including an unbeaten 152 against the Punjab Kings at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. His strong form contrasted sharply with Pant’s season and has added to speculation over how Delhi may restructure its squad.
Coaching Changes Expected At Delhi
Delhi Capitals are also expected to undergo significant changes in their coaching setup. Former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh is likely to join the franchise’s support staff. Pant had worked closely with Yuvraj before the 2026 season, and the move could strengthen existing ties between the two. Meanwhile, Sourav Ganguly is set to return as head of cricketing affairs with JSW resuming control of franchise operations.
Uncertainty Over Current Management
Changes in leadership may also affect the existing coaching staff. Hemang Badani, who served as head coach for the last two seasons, is unlikely to continue in the role, according to reports. Delhi Capitals finished sixth in IPL 2026 and missed out on the playoffs, prompting a broader review of both squad composition and management structure ahead of the next season.
