Suryakumar Yadav To Not Get Captaincy Duties For Next 2 Years? Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar Drops Massive Hints

BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar and BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia addressed the media at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai to announce T20I squads for the tours of Ireland and England and the Asian Games in Japan. The biggest shock of the day was that Shreyas Iyer was named India’s newest T20I captain, replacing Suryakumar Yadav, who led India to a historic back-to-back T20 World Cup title on home soil. The announcement sent shockwaves through Indian cricket circles when Agarkar addressed the media and signalled that they are looking at Iyer to keep the charge for at least 2 years. This has led to fans and experts being divided over whether the selectors were right.
Why Iyer? Agarkar's Two-Year Vision
Chief selector Ajit Agarkar was upfront about the thinking behind the call. Agarkar termed Iyer a "well-deserving captain" for his experience of captaincy in the IPL franchises and consistent performances. “They have a bit more time for the next World Cup,” he said, citing Iyer’s record of leading KKR to the IPL title in 2024 and PBKS to the final in 2025. Agarkar said of Suryakumar: “He will be 38 before the next T20 World Cup in 2028 and we reassess after every World Cup cycle as to where we are headed.”
The Squad: New Faces and Notable Omissions
Tilak Varma was appointed vice-captain, and 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshireceived his maiden India call-up, becoming the youngest player ever chosen in an Indian men's squad, surpassing Sachin Tendulkar's long-standing record. Rinku Singh and Kuldeep Yadav were left out of the squad, and Nitish Kumar Reddy, Ravi Bishnoi, and Prince Yadav were picked. Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah were given rest. There is a distinct generational shift in the squad with selectors building towards the 2028 LA Olympics and the T20 World Cup.
The Numbers That Made the Case
Suryakumar’s campaign in the 2026 T20 World Cup, however, saw him only score 242 runs in nine innings at a strike rate of 136.72, and was followed by a lacklustre IPL 2026, where he could only score 270 runs in 13 innings at an average of 20.76. With form, age, and future planning all pointing in the same direction, the selectors took their call.
And in the case of Shreyas Iyer, he is the only captain in IPL history to have led three different franchises to the finals - Delhi Capitals in 2020, KKR to the title in 2024, and Punjab Kings to the final in 2025. This is the pedigree that chief selector Ajit Agarkar had in mind when he said Iyer was “a well-deserving captain” and added that his own batting form had been exceptional with 604 runs at a strike rate of 175.07 in IPL 2025 and 498 runs at 168.81 in IPL 2026. Suryakumar was going to be 38 before the next T20 World Cup, and the selectors weren’t just picking a captain for today; they were picking one for the next two years.
From Belfast to Beyond what awaits Iyer: England Challenge and the Road to LA 2028
Iyer’s captaincy starts against a depleted Ireland side in Belfast on June 26 and 28. This is a useful warm-up but not an actual test. This is on when India face England in a five-match T20I series from July 1 to 11, in English conditions and without Bumrah, who has been rested. Here, Iyer's tactical nous and man-management will be truly tested. Beyond that are the Asian Games in Japan in September and the ultimate destination of the LA 2028 Olympics and the T20 World Cup. Both the team and the captaincy were assembled with 2028 in mind.
