La Remontada de la Copa del Mundo! Spanish Armada Destroys Saudi Defence to Clinch a Dominant 4-0 Victory
Spain bounced back to winning ways at the FIFA 2026 World Cup, dismantling Saudi Arabia 4-0 with goals from returning teenager Lamine Yamal and a Mikel Oyarzabal brace.

Following an embarrassing 1-1 scoreline in their first FIFA 2026 World Cup fixture with Cape Verde, Spain needed a strong reaction from themselves. And Spain showed just that by producing a brilliant performance in beating Saudi Arabia 4-0 at Atlanta Stadium.
Yamal's Historic Return and Oyarzabal's Quickfire Brace
The most talked about aspect before the match was Lamine Yamal coming back into the lineup after being out with an injury. At just 18 years old, the promising youth made an instant impact on his return to the squad. In just the 10th minute of play, Yamal made his move in the box and found the back of the net to score his very first goal in the World Cup.

Spain was simply too much for the Saudi Arabian team to handle from the beginning of the game due to their constant pressing and fast pace of attack. Right after the opening goal, Mikel Oyarzabal took full control of the final third of the pitch. Oyarzabal scored two goals consecutively in the 21st and 24th minutes.
Midfield Magic and Second-Half Dominance
Although the forwards scored the goals, the real driving force behind Spain's superiority lay in the form of their midfield. It was the incredible talent and perfect tempo from Dani Olmo, Pedri, and Rodri that made the lives of Saudi players difficult, as Spain had total possession and transitioned to attack effortlessly.
At the start of the second half (49'), Spain went on to increase their lead. Marc Cucurella fired a shot on target which was saved initially by the Saudi goalkeeper Mohammed Al-Owais, but the rebound from the shot ended up going into their own goalpost through defender Hassan Altambakti.
Late VAR Drama
Even though Saudi Arabia fought valiantly and produced some flashes of possession towards the end, they could not get through Spain’s sturdy backline. Saudi Arabia were no match at all, as they failed to take any shots throughout the match.
Towards the end of added time (90+5'), the replacement Ferran Torres appeared to add a cherry to the cake by scoring from a well-delivered cross to the back post. But unfortunately, the referee decided that the goal was invalid due to a slight offside decision by VAR.
Sportscape believes that the Spain team is now looking forward to their most challenging fixture of Group H, as they go into the match full of confidence.
