Ghana MP Urges Sports Infrastructure Funding Over Fan Trips
Ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Eric Edem Agbana urged governments to prioritize sports infrastructure instead of funding fan trips to attend the tournament.

The ethical dilemma of long-term benefit of all vs. short-term benefit of a few has bothered academicians for centuries, with utilitarianism as Mill's stance, which proposes greater benefit of all over an individual.
This same conflict was faced by the Ghana government as its honorary MP Eric Edem Agbana took sides with Mill during a media discussion to make a statement on the better utility of state funds in sports infrastructure in contrast to funding fan trips to the FIFA World Cup 2026.
The government had proposed to sponsor a decided number of fans to experience the most awaited FIFA World Cup in person, to which the minister gave statistical evidence on the fallibility of the proposal.

Evidential Defence by the MP
“If you ask me to bring even 10 people from Ketu North to go to the World Cup and you spend close to $90,000, I will tell you to please use that to construct an AstroTurf or a sports complex for me in Ketu North,” he said. Mr. Agbana made the remarks during an interview on Citi FM on Monday, March 9.
Examples like the Borteyman Sports Complex, commissioned in 2024 ahead of the African Games, showcase a stellar 1000-seater capacity and have benefited the state as well as the state's athletes and shall continue to do so; likewise, the Ghana Sports Fund 2025.Sports infrastructure forms the foundation of a state's prospects in hosting marquee events and providing exposure to its hidden talents, not to forget the revenue boost it brings to the economy through tourism.
Ghana sports minister had recently praised Gambia's dedication to sports infrastructure and now Ghana needs to show the same. Therefore, prioritizing building the concrete base of the house, which the state aims to label as its anchor hould be held over buying shiny decorations for the house, which might look like they will benefit us, but it's only lacking foresight.
