LG Saxena Unveils Massive Sports Infrastructure in Leh Under ₹30 Crore Expansion Plan
LG Saxena launches major sports infrastructure in Leh with a ₹30 crore development push aimed at boosting youth training and high-altitude sports.

Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena has unveiled a major ₹30 crore sports infrastructure in Leh initiative aimed at transforming the Union Territory into a key high-altitude sports development destination. The large-scale project includes modern training facilities, upgraded stadium infrastructure, indoor sports complexes, and athlete-focused amenities designed to strengthen grassroots sports participation and professional athlete preparation across the Ladakh region.
The new sports infrastructure in Leh was inaugurated during LG Saxena’s official visit to Ladakh, where he highlighted the importance of sports as a tool for youth empowerment, national integration, and regional development. According to officials, the investment will focus on creating year-round sports facilities capable of supporting disciplines such as football, athletics, ice hockey, archery, and winter sports training at high-altitude conditions.
LG Saxena stated that the development aligns with the government’s broader vision of integrating remote Himalayan regions into India’s expanding sports ecosystem. He emphasised that Leh’s geographical and climatic conditions make it highly suitable for endurance training and specialised high-altitude athletic preparation similar to global mountain-based training centres
The infrastructure expansion includes advanced synthetic playing surfaces, upgraded spectator facilities, modern gymnasiums, accommodation blocks for athletes, and dedicated coaching support systems. Officials also confirmed that several facilities are being designed to host regional and national-level competitions in the future, potentially increasing sports tourism and economic activity within the region.
Sports infrastructure in Leh has gained increasing national attention in recent years due to Ladakh’s rising focus on youth sports development and adventure athletics. The region has already hosted winter sports festivals, ice hockey tournaments, and mountain-based endurance competitions, attracting both domestic and international participants. Analysts believe the latest investment could significantly accelerate Ladakh’s emergence as a specialised sports destination within India.
Sportscape observes that the expansion of sports infrastructure in Leh reflects India’s growing focus on creating region-specific high-performance training ecosystems capable of supporting both elite competition and grassroots sports development.
