Sabarmati Riverfront Sports Infrastructure Push Accelerates as Ahmedabad’s Mega Facelift Gains Momentum
Sports infrastructure development at the Sabarmati Riverfront accelerates as Ahmedabad pushes ahead with a massive riverfront facelift linked to Commonwealth Games and Olympic ambitions.

Ahmedabad’s sporting ambitions are moving into a new phase as the Sabarmati Riverfront is set to become one of India’s largest integrated sports corridors, with nearly 14 kilometres of the riverfront now reserved exclusively for sports infrastructure development ahead of the 2030 Commonwealth Games and India’s long-term 2036 Olympic ambitions.
According to officials involved in the project, the Sabarmati Riverfront facelift gains momentum through Phases 2 to 4 of the redevelopment plan, where land stretching between Motera and Indira Bridge has been earmarked entirely for sports infrastructureprojects. The development is expected to significantly expand Ahmedabad’s position as one of India’s fastest-growing sports cities.
The upcoming infrastructure will form a major part of the proposed Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave (SVP Sports Enclave), a master-planned sporting ecosystem being designed with long-term legacy infrastructure in mind. Gujarat government officials told The Indian Express that the master plan is expected to be completed within three years.
Rahul Gupta, Secretary of the Sports, Youth and Cultural Activities Department, confirmed that sports facilities are being planned in alignment with the enclave’s master plan. Officials stated that priority is currently being given to sports infrastructure before commercial and recreational expansion begins along the riverfront.
The project is also expected to integrate hospitality, retail, dining districts, public plazas, outdoor recreation areas, and river-facing sports venues designed around international urban sports infrastructure standards. Authorities involved in the planning process said the riverfront frontage will include open viewing decks and public spaces aimed at creating a global sporting destination experience. The Sabarmati Riverfront has already emerged as one of Ahmedabad’s biggest public infrastructure success stories. In recent years, the corridor has expanded through sports parks, public recreation zones, pedestrian bridges, and tourism-driven urban projects. Adani Sportsline’s Sabarmati Riverfront Sports Park, inaugurated in 2023, currently houses facilities for tennis, basketball, cricket, kabaddi, skating, and swimming.
Urban infrastructure activity around the Sabarmati Riverfront has also intensified alongside broader redevelopment proposals involving convention centres, entertainment hubs, mobility projects, and tourism expansion. However, the rapid expansion has simultaneously renewed debates around urban sustainability, public accessibility, and balanced infrastructure planning as Ahmedabad prepares for larger international sporting ambitions.
Sportscape feels the Sabarmati Riverfront sports infrastructure expansion is no longer just an urban beautification project, it is evolving into a strategic sports-city blueprint tied directly to India’s global sporting ambitions. If executed efficiently, the Sabarmati Riverfront could become one of the most significant multi-sport urban infrastructure models developed in India.
