Late Goal Fest in LA! Switzerland Ignite to Crush 10-Man Bosnia and Herzegovina 4-1
Switzerland surged to the top of Group B with a breathtaking 4-1 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina, sparked by a late Johan Manzambi brace and a red card for Tarik Muharemović.

Entering Matchday 2, both Switzerland and Bosnia and Herzegovina needed a win badly. Following Switzerland’s 1-1 draw with Qatar and Bosnia’s 1-1 draw with Canada in their FIFA 2026 World Cup opening games, the stakes were very high at the Los Angeles Stadium. The match that began as a nervously contested clash turned into a relentless late-game onslaught, with the Swiss running riot against the ten-man Bosnian side, defeating them 4-1.
A Cagey First Half
The match continued to be tough until the 70th minute, when the Swiss were dominating due to the possession of the ball courtesy of Granit Xhaka, their midfield expert. Moreover, their centre back, Manuel Akanji, was keeping the leading forward of Bosnia, Edin Dzeko, at bay during the match. Nevertheless, despite having all the possession of the ball, the Swiss were not converting on the other end. The defence by the Bosnians made the European powerhouses feel frustrated.
The 74th-Minute Assault and a Red Card
Knowing that a spark was needed, Swiss manager Murat Yakin resorted to his substitutes and brought on 20-year-old Johan Manzambi in the 71st minute. The effects of the introduction were almost immediate as just three minutes later (74'), Manzambi delivered a vicious side volley to open the scoring and change the complexion of the match entirely.
For Bosnia, things only got worse very quickly. At the 80th minute mark, a red card was shown directly to defender Tarik Muharemović for pulling down Breel Embolo in the area when he was the last man available to deny an obvious goal-scoring opportunity.
The Swiss capitalised on their numerical superiority as Rubén Vargas put the match beyond all doubt at the 84th minute mark after converting a well-taken shot. Manzambi then effectively sealed the deal by scoring again in the 90th minute.
There was life in Bosnia after all in stoppage time when Ermin Mahmić fired an unbelievable volley into the goalmouth for the visitors (90’+3). However, the slim hopes of a miracle were swiftly dashed when Xhaka fired the ball into the net from the penalty spot in the 97th minute of play.
Group B Permutations: What's Next?
With such a resounding victory, Switzerland can lead Group B with 4 points and take one huge step closer to the knockout rounds. A win in their last game in the group stage against Canada will assure them of reaching the round of 32 for the fourth successive World Cup tournament.
As far as Bosnia and Herzegovina are concerned, the scenario is extremely bleak. They are sitting at the bottom of the group with 1 point and a badly hurt goal difference.
Sportscape feels that Bosnia needs to come up with a decisive win against Qatar in the last group stage game for their last hope of qualification to the next round, and they need to plan every strategy very carefully if they wish to stay in the race.
