Union Sports Minister Raksha Khadse Reviews Shillong Sports Infrastructure, Pushes Northeast High-Performance Vision
Union Sports Minister Raksha Khadse reviews sports infrastructure and athlete training systems at SAI NEHU Shillong while highlighting the Northeast’s potential as a high-altitude sports development hub.

Union Minister of State for Youth Affairs & Sports, Raksha Khadse, intensified the Centre’s focus on Northeast sports development during her high-profile visit to the Sports Authority of India (SAI) North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) Centre in Shillong, where she reviewed athlete facilities, interacted with trainees, and assessed ongoing sports infrastructure expansion projects.
During the inspection, Raksha Khadse visited multiple Field of Play (FoP) facilities and training centres while engaging directly with athletes and coaches across football, archery, athletics, and other disciplines. The Union Sports Minister Raksha Khadse also participated in football and Indian round archery activities alongside young athletes at the centre.
According to the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, the Shillong facility is increasingly being positioned as a strategic high-altitude training hub capable of supporting elite Indian athletes preparing for international competitions. Khadse stated that the Northeast possesses “immense sporting talent” and requires sustained investment in sports infrastructure, athlete development systems, and scientific training ecosystems.
“This centre has tremendous potential for training elite athletes because of its natural beauty, peaceful environment and pleasant weather conditions,” Raksha Khadse said during interactions with athletes and officials.
The visit also coincided with the Ministry’s broader push to strengthen India’s grassroots and high-performance sports ecosystem through expanded regional infrastructure networks. A fresh statement issued by the Press Information Bureau highlighted the government’s emphasis on developing athlete-centric training facilities under long-term national sporting plans.
Officials present during the inspection included Rajnish Mishra, Assistant Director of the Sports Authority of India, and John Kharshing, Working President of the Meghalaya Olympic Association.
The SAI NEHU Shillong centre currently supports multiple training programs and has emerged as one of the Northeast’s important sports development facilities. The region has consistently produced international-level athletes in boxing, weightlifting, football, archery, and athletics, making it a strategic priority in India’s long-term sporting ambitions.
The PIB release also noted that the government continues expanding sports infrastructure through Khelo India initiatives, regional training centres, and talent identification programs aimed at strengthening India’s Olympic preparation ecosystem.
Industry observers believe the increasing policy attention toward the Northeast reflects a broader shift in India’s sports planning model, where regional high-performance centres are being integrated into national athlete development strategies instead of functioning as isolated training hubs.
Sportscape feels Union Sports Minister Raksha Khadse’s Shillong visit reflects a more serious institutional push toward converting the Northeast from a talent-producing region into a fully integrated high-performance sports ecosystem.
The long-term impact of these sports infrastructure investments will depend on whether athlete development, sports science, coaching, and governance systems evolve simultaneously alongside physical infrastructure.
