AFI Mandates The SKY Gene Test For Women Athletes To Be Eligible From 2027
AFI makes the SKY gene test compulsory for women athletes to participate in competitions from 2027 onwards.

The Athletics Federation of India (AFI)makes the SKY gene test compulsory for women athletes in India. The regulation was introduced by the World Athleticsduring the 2025 Tokyo World Athletics Championship. If the female candidate fails to take the test within the allotted timeline, they will be considered ineligible for the competitions in 2027. The circular published by AFI alerts women athletes to follow the SOP guidelines to participate in their next sporting event without facing any consequences. “With effect from next year, no athlete shall be eligible to participate in any competition organised by the AFI without undergoing the SRY gene test,” mentions the circular.
The Vice President of World Athletics Comments On Gene Test In Women Athletes
Adille Sumariwalla, the former president of AFI and the vice president of World Athletics, ensured the women athletes, “It’s an expensive test (SRY Gene Test). Therefore, AFI will financially support the athletes.” He also said that AFI will monitor the entire process. In his words, “The AFI will also closely monitor the testing procedure (SRY gene test) to avoid impersonation.” “The procedure of the SRY gene test has started in India,” he added. The regulation was discussed at the AGM in Nagaland.
The Testing Procedure
The SKY gene test is a once-in-a-lifetime test that helps determine the physical appearance of the human chromosomes. MedGenome Labs Ltd. will conduct this gene test in women athletes under the strict supervision of the federation. The lab is accredited and authorised by the AFI. The federation has suggested that female participants carry the required documents, a passport, and an AFI UID card for the test. They are required to seek a letter before the testing from the AFI. The SKY gene test has already begun for domestic competitions, starting from Ranchi.
Sportscapebelieves that the gene test in women athletes will ensure a fair contest in the competition. Also, AFI is taking the financial responsibility for the SRY gene test, which is a solid move. This shows that they feel accountability for female athletes in India.
