Meghalaya Boosts Sports Infrastructure in Khasi Hills with New Synthetic Track
Meghalaya continues its push to become a northeastern sports hub, with the latest development in the Khasi Hills where Health Minister Wailadmiki Shylla laid the foundation stone for a ₹13 crore synthetic athletic track in South West Khasi Hills.

The three musketeers of Meghalaya, namely the Garo, Khasi, and Jaintia hills, are upgrading their terrain to build quality sports infrastructure. First in line were the Garo Hills , where a new monorail was introduced in the Mangsang district. Following the leadership were the Jaintia Hills , where an extensive sports infrastructure review was carried out recently with suggestions of major improvements.
Now the baton goes to the Khasi Hills. Cabinet minister for sports and youth affairs in the Meghalaya government Wailadmiki Shylla , has laid the inaugural stone for the much-awaited synthetic athletic track at Sakwang village, South West Khasi Hills District.

What's in the targeted project
The project is being estimated to cost ₹13 crore. With the foundational stone ceremony, the minister also highlighted the government's prioritization of the sports infrastructural sector as a major economic and welfare pillar. Following the trend from Assam on building sports infrastructure to honor Olympic winners of the state, the minister also celebrated Olympian Beningstar Lyngkho at the event for the track being built in the star athlete's hometown.
Government's vision for the state
This track comes at a strategically significant time when the northeast is gearing up its sports infrastructure in revamping the area as a major sports hub and honoring the athletic culture of its residents. CM Conrad K. Sangma had recently laid the foundation for the Mawkhanu Football Stadium complex in the capital city of Shillong.
Meghalaya also set its place right on the global sporting map by hosting the Indian Sailing League at the Umiam Lake which welcomed 58 international sailors in 14 teams, thereby setting the precinct for the state's sporting makeover.
