Bengal Sports Infrastructure Budget 2026 Unveils Stadium Projects and Sports University
Bengal Sports Infrastructure Budget 2026 includes a sports university, international-standard stadiums, facility upgrades and 100 mini indoor arenas under the Khelo India programme.

The Bengal Sports Infrastructure Budget 2026 describes plans to boldly develop sports facilities and support for athletes with plans from the state government for building more stadiums and a sports university as well as infrastructure for grassroots sports. These plans, part of the Bengal Budget 2026-27, aim to create a stronger sports ecosystem in the state to support more athletes.
In the major proposals, the Budget has made funds of ₹150 crore available for the establishment of a sports university and another ₹ 100 crores has been earmarked for the upgrading of existing infrastructure along with the Rabindra Sarovar Stadium in Kolkata.
Budget Primarily Focuses on International Stadiums and Grassroots Infrastructure
To further augment sports infrastructure in the state, the state government has proposed the setting up of an international standard stadium and an indoor sports arena in North Bengal. The Budget also provides for the upgradation of the existing sports infrastructure to augment the standards of training and competition.
Speaking about the Budget, Finance Minister Swapan Dasguptasaid that 100 mini indoor stadiums would be built as part of the Centre's Khelo India programme. Each indoor stadium would cost about ₹5 crores, with 100 indoor stadiums planned within the current financial year, and would be constructed in different Assembly constituencies.
Budget Allocates Money for Athlete Incentives and Support to Sports Clubs
Besides upgradation of the sports infrastructure, the government has also proposed the establishment of a ₹1 crore fund for aiding sports clubs which participate in national competitions. In addition to this, a separate fund of ₹50 crore will be established for rewarding national and international medal winners.
Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Indranil Khan noted the allocations strengthen the government's support for coaches and nutrition for athletes.
“No earlier government made such substantial allocations for sports and youth welfare. The impact of these investments will become visible over the next two to three years. This budget lays the foundation for better coaching facilities, improved nutritional support and stronger institutional backing for athletes,” Khan said.
Can Bengal turn Infrastructure Investments into Sporting Success?
Sportscapefeels that the Bengal Budget 2026-27 is building more than new facilities. Investments are made in education, provision of incentives for athletes, and improving grassroots access, demonstrating a commitment to building an inclusive sporting framework. Execution is the challenge. If projects are successfully executed, Bengal could strengthen its competitive pipeline of discipline-specific talent in the years to come.
