Canada vs Bosnia and Herzegovina: Cyle Larin Rescues Co-Hosts in Frantic Canada vs Bosnia and Herzegovina Opener
Co-hosts Canada shared the points in their FIFA 2026 opener as super-sub Cyle Larin's late strike cancelled out Jovo Lukić's first-half goal in a breathless 1-1 draw.

The most awaited Opening match for co-hosts Canada for the FIFA World Cup 2026 didn’t disappoint the fans even one bit and provided a high-octane and nail-biting clash between Canada and Bosnia & Herzegovina.
First Half: Bosnia's Set-Piece Mastery
The game started physically tough. Canada’s Alistair Johnston took an early initiative by receiving his first yellow card after ten minutes for a harsh tackle on Amar Memić. The Canadian hosts came close to opening the scoring through their playmaker Jonathan David, who fired a dangerous shot in the sixteenth minute but saw his efforts saved by the alert reaction of the Bosnian goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj.
It was the resolute Bosnia team who scored the opener, however. In the 20th minute, they were able to exploit a perfect dead-ball situation when the captain of the visiting side, Sead Kolašinac, made a clever header into the danger area, and Lukić finished off with a clinical finish to give his team the 1-0 lead.
Bosnia’s Ermedin Demirović and goalscorer Lukić received their first yellow cards in the 44th and 45+1st minutes, respectively, as the half came to a close.
Second Half: The Canadian Siege and Larin's Rescue
Coming out of the tunnel, Canada dramatically increased their intensity on pressing, absolutely besieging the Bosnian penalty box. However, Canada failed to score when Richie Laryea scored a great individual goal past the Bosnian goalkeeper, but he was denied by a miraculous clearance. However, less than a minute after this, the Canadian goalkeeper had to make a stunning save against a deadly counterattack from Bosnia.
After another goal-line clearance in the 66th minute that would have made the frustrated Canadians' dreams come true, Jesse Marsch looked towards his substitutes. However, it paid off.
Cyle Larin was substituted in, and he immediately left his mark on the pitch. At the 79th minute, to everyone’s surprise, he scored a fantastic equaliser by managing to find the gap between two Bosnian defenders and made the entire Toronto stadium go crazy.
Larin almost snatched the game away from the Bosnians in the 90+6th minute when he attempted a shot on target, only to be denied again; thus, the final scoreline stayed 1-1 at the end of the game, and both teams shared a point each.
Sportscape feels that the 1-1 scoreline stood as a perfectly fair reflection of a magnificent game. Both teams displayed tremendous heart and aggressive, talented FIFA World Cup football, giving fans an unforgettable tournament opener.
