French Football in Mourning: Brest Manager Éric Roy Passes Away at 58
French football mourns the tragic passing of Stade Brest manager Éric Roy at age 58 following a courageous, private battle with pancreatic cancer.

There have been many great French football managers in the history of the game, but French football will be mourning the loss of a truly exceptional figure. Éric Roy, the highly admired manager who made Stade Brest one of the greatest underdogs in Europe, died at the age of 58.
A Private and Courageous Battle
Sadly, the cause of Roy's early demise was cancer of the pancreas. In a heartbreaking announcement on Wednesday, the former manager's family confirmed that he had been battling his sickness for almost four years in private.
What is even more astounding about Roy's successes as a manager recently is the fact that he did so despite undergoing tough treatment for his condition. The former manager, however, kept motivating his troops from the touchline despite suffering from such an ailment. According to his family, football, especially his tenure at Brest, was "one of the most wonderful times" in Roy's life, helping him get through the tough times.
A Distinguished Career on the Pitch and Touchline
Before cementing his legacy from the dugout, Roy was a highly respected figure on the pitch throughout the 1990s and early 2000s.
- As a Player: Being a tough-tackling and smart defensive midfielder, Roy made more than 300 appearances in his career in the French Football League. He began and ended his 16-year-long playing career at OGC Nice. In between, he also had a great spell at Olympique Lyonnais and another one with Olympique de Marseille. Roy even tried his luck in England’s Premier League by playing for Sunderland.
- First Jobs in Management/Coaching: Following his retirement, he easily moved over to the football management world and took up sports director positions too. He coached his boyhood club Nice from March 2010 until November 2011. After that, he used his vast experience of the sport to become the sporting director of Nice, RC Lens and English side Watford Football Club.
The Miracle at Stade Brest
Eric Roy’s career as a manager was at its peak when he returned to coaching after taking a hiatus of eleven years, making him realise that he was full of tactical brilliance.
In January of 2023, he assumed control of Stade Brest, a team thought of as relegation contenders in France’s highest division. With the help of the club’s limited resources, he developed a team philosophy that helped them stay in the league and also ensured that they were successful.
In the 2023-24 season, Eric Roy was instrumental in creating history for Stade Brest. He managed to get them into third place in Ligue 1 and their qualification for the first time in European competitions, straight away giving them entry into the UEFA Champions League. Due to his outstanding efforts as a coach, Eric Roy rightly won the award of Ligue 1 Coach of the Season. In the subsequent season, Roy was able to guide his team through the group stage of the Champions League.
Sportscape thinks that Roy would be remembered not only for his achievements at Stade Brest but also for the humility and bravery with which he played every game day, and we send our condolences to his family and loved ones during this tough time.
