Foundation laid for 80-acre marvel in Chennai's OMR by MK Stalin
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin laid the foundation stone for the ₹261-crore Global Sports City in Chennai's Semmencherry

Tamil Nadu, already renowned in sporting lore as it serves as the home to chess grandmasters like Viswanathan Anand and a cricket battleground for IPL giants Chennai Super Kings, is set to redefine its legacy. On February 19, 2026, Chief Minister MK Stalin laid the foundation stone for the ₹261-crore Global Sports City in Semmencherry, Chennai, signaling a major shift toward Olympic-level excellence and international event hosting.
Led by the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT), this multi-sport venture unfolds over 80 acres in its initial phase along the OMR corridor. It promises world-class facilities that will be inclusive of an international football stadium, shooting ranges, archery arenas, rowing and kayaking tracks, BMX circuits, skating rinks, and athlete hostels.
Speaking at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium during the 'Champions of Tamil Nadu' event, Chief Minister Stalin said the expansive multi-sport project would raise Chennai’s profile across disciplines and bolster Olympic training, sports tourism, and international event hosting.
Igniting Sports Infrastructure Revolution in Chennai
The Global Sports City is more than just bricks and fields; it’s a ₹261-crore game-changer aimed at elite training and mega-events. The first phase will house state-of-the-art venues for football, shooting, archery, aquatics, and extreme sports like BMX and skating, integrated with residential facilities to nurture talent year-round. This initiative tackles long-standing gaps, such as the need for air-conditioned SDAT hostels, positioning Chennai as India's next sports tourism hub.
Fostering Sports Development is the vision of CM
Tamil Nadu’s sports revolution under Stalin includes ₹172.80 crore in cash prizes to over 5,400 medalists in four years, with equal incentives for para-athletes (₹30 crore disbursed), and the hiring of 76 coaches after a decade-long freeze. The vision of the CM appears to be fostering the sports advancement in chennai with extending monetary appreciation for the young future athletes.
