“Golf Can Transform India’s Tourism Landscape”: Kapil Dev Calls for Infrastructure Push and Youth Participation Surge
Cricket legend Kapil Dev has said golf holds massive potential to boost India’s tourism economy.

Where golf’s precision meets India's growth trajectory, Kapil Dev says the sport could become a catalyst for tourism and talent development. Speaking at a golf event in New Delhi, Dev highlighted golf’s potential to attract visitors and boost India’s growing sports economy, while transforming the country’s overall sporting landscape.
Dev urged the creation of world-class golf courses, training facilities, and competitive circuits nationwide. He pointed to golf tourism success in Scotland, Ireland, and Spain, arguing that India’s golf infrastructure must expand in scale and quality to generate similar international interest. “ At least 20 more such courses are required. Cricket can be played even on the streets, but that can’t be done with golf,” he said.

He also stressed the importance of stronger youth training programs, greater grassroots access, and professional coaching to broaden participation.
Growth and Opportunity in Golf Infrastructure
India’s golf infrastructure has been steadily improving. The Indian Golf Union notes the country now has more than 200 golf courses, with iconic venues like Delhi Golf Club, Royal Calcutta Golf Club, and Prestige Golfshire gaining recognition in Asia. Yet many experts believe more international-standard courses, practice facilities, and performance centers are needed to compete and attract major tours such as the Asian Tour and DP World Tour.
Countries with mature golf tourism markets generate well over $20 billion annually in related travel spending, signaling India’s potential if similar growth paths are pursued.
Youth Development and Economic Promise
Experts say expanding grassroots exposure—from school programs to collegiate leagues, can cultivate future golf stars while expanding the fan base. Better access to courses, affordable coaching, and national league systems would deepen participation and help produce talent capable of competing internationally, elevating India’s sporting profile.
