“J&K Has Immense Sporting Potential”: Sports Minister Satish Sharma unveils ambitious vision for the state
J&K Sports Minister Satish Sharma discussed plan for upcoming sports events.

Jammu & Kashmir)’s Minister of Youth Services & Sports, Satish Sharma, on Tuesday, chaired a high-level meeting to assess the sports infrastructure development and the sports schedule for the year 2026-2027. Commissioner Secretary, Youth Services & Sports, Shahid Chaudhary; Secretary, Jammu & Kashmir Sports Council, Nuzhat Gul; and other officials were also part of the review meeting.
Referring to the growing importance of sports in enabling youth empowerment, social transformation, and economic upliftment, Satish Sharma stated the government’s commitment towards creating world-class sporting opportunities even in the remotest districts of the state. The proposed sports calendar includes diverse sports events ranging from international and national-level competitions to district-level events, states Sharma.
Successful hosting of flagship initiatives such as the Women’s Super 10 League, Kashmir Super League, Ganderbal Super League, Pro Kabaddi Championship, and Jammu Cyclothon, among other community-based sports events, reflects the state’s consistent efforts towards improving sports infrastructure. These initiatives have not only helped in the identification of potential talent but have also placed Jammu and Kashmir as a potential location for future international sporting events.
Satish Sharma also directed officials to work on the rapid development of sports infrastructure, the transparent selection processes, and the extension of outreach within the state, while maintaining effective collaboration with all stakeholders involved. The minister, during the review meeting, added, “Jammu and Kashmir has the potential across various sports disciplines, and with continued efforts in improving sports infrastructure, better coaching facilities, and improved technology, it can produce national and international-level champions.”
Sportscape believes that the Jammu and Kashmir government’s continuous prioritisation of sports infrastructure development holds the potential to turn the union territory into a major sports hub. The proposed plan for the upcoming year is expected to conduct more than 426 sports events, ranging across 50-plus disciplines, with an expected participation of over 21 lakh young athletes across Jammu and Kashmir. Initiatives like these will promote sports participation within the region, allowing athletes to make the best use of sports infrastructure facilities available to them.
