A new report claims Mitchell Marsh is the frontrunner to replace Rishabh Pant as Lucknow Super Giants' captain, with the franchise yet to confirm a decision after Pant stepped down following a last-place IPL 2026 finish. According to CricBlogger, Mitchell Marsh has emerged as the front-runner to become the next captain of the Lucknow Super Giants. The team has not yet decided, but certain trade-related formalities are already resolved. The position became available after Pant voluntarily requested to step down after LSG finished last in the 2026 Indian Premier League, having finished seventh under his direction the previous season as well.

Why Marsh Is Being Tipped for the Role
A source close to the franchise said that Marsh is their first choice at the moment, with South Africa’s Aiden Markram understood to be the only other name under consideration. The pick isn’t coming out randomly. Marsh finished IPL 2026 as LSG’s leading run scorer with 563 runs at a strike rate of over 164, the first LSG batter to record back-to-back 500-plus run seasons. After that, he delivered three innings of 90 plus during the season: 111 against RCB, 90 off 38 balls against CSK, and 96 off 57 against Rajasthan Royals.
These numbers have made him the most consistent face in what has been an overwhelming campaign for the franchise. His form at the top of the order is the one constant the team has been able to build around, with LSG missing the playoffs for a second straight year, which seems to be feeding directly into the case for handing him the leadership role as well.
The Coaching Factor?
The source said two of LSG's support staff members, Justin Langer and Tom Moody, are in favour of handing the captaincy to their fellow Australian, which could make the internal decision quite simple. Moody, who has had a successful coaching career, including winning IPL and Hundred titles, joined the team’s setup in late 2025 and is LSG’s Global Director of Cricket. Langer has been the team's head coach since IPL 2024, but his own role has reportedly come under scrutiny. The team has won only 17 of 42 games under him in three seasons, and LSG is rumoured to be considering a more extensive reorganisation of the coaching staff after finishing last in 2026.
Given this context, their alleged support for Marsh is noteworthy: both men are reportedly in agreement that the fellow Australian should take over the leadership group. This could be a sign that whatever else is uncertain in LSG right now, Marsh’s position for captaincy is something the dressing room’s senior voices already seem convinced of.
A Pattern LSG Has Used Before
The Pune owners who now run LSG have already tried the Australian route before. They went with Steve Smith over MS Dhoni to lead their Pune franchise during the two-year bans of CSK and Rajasthan Royals. If Marsh were to land the job, he would become only the second Australian to captain an IPL side after Pat Cummins in a league that is otherwise led solely by Indian captains.
How well have Marsh and Pant actually performed?
The logic is even clearer with the numbers. While Marsh was piling up the runs at the top of the order, Pant scored just 312 runs at a strike rate of 138.05 in IPL 2026, having also struggled the previous year with 269 runs at 133.16, with LSG winning just 10 of 28 matches across his two seasons in charge.
