Is the USA Gatekeeping the World Cup? Palestinian Football Federation President Stranded in Mexico Amid Growing Visa Chaos
The USA's border crackdown for FIFA 2026 continues. Following the Omar Artan and Iran controversies, the Palestinian Football Federation President is now stranded in Mexico.

What was once thought to be the bright horizon of a world-united, all-inclusive FIFA 2026 World Cup has quickly turned sour due to rigid U.S. immigration policy. The beautiful game was meant to know no boundaries, but for some countries, those boundaries are slowly turning into concrete barriers.
In yet another geopolitical scandal to beset the competition, Jibril Rajoub, the head of the Palestinian Football Federation, finds himself stranded in Mexico, despite being in possession of all the required documentation that would allow him to enter the U.S. and play a role on the international scene.
Rajoub, who could very well be speaking on behalf of the Palestinian National Football Team, has found himself at a crossroads because of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)..
A Disturbing and Continuous Pattern
The detention of Rajoub in Mexico is only the latest in a seemingly coordinated, politically motivated campaign of harassment and intimidation at the borders of the host nation. The USA is developing a very questionable practice of using its immigration laws to block the football community from crossing its borders:
- The Omar Artan Tragedy: It was only last week that a historic decision took place where a referee of Somali origin and with FIFA clearance was illegally detained at Miami airport for ten long hours and summarily deported without realizing his World Cup dream.
- The Iran Football Team Intimidation: It was recently reported how the members of an entire national team were subjected to lengthy questioning and harassment when arriving on American soil, totally derailing their World Cup preparations.
- The Jibril Rajoub Blocking: And now, the president of a recognized national football federation is being kept out of the host country through an illegal blockade, leaving him stranded in a neighboring country while the voices of his federation are stifled.
Geopolitics is Overpowering the Sport
Never before has geopolitics entered international soccer through such overt means. Through its deliberate policy of holding up or refusing visas to certain individuals coming from certain geopolitical regions, the USA is clearly pushing away the very fans and developing countries who have embraced the game.
As FIFA President Gianni Infantino urges the world to "just chill" about the Omar Artan matter, the lack of comment by the governing body of the sport is deafening. The host nation must fulfil its duty of ensuring unfettered entry to all deserving members irrespective of any political disputes.
Sportscape feels that the fact that high-profile people like Jibril Rajoub can simply be stranded at the border by ICE raises many red flags concerning the validity of the 2026 event. This World Cup was meant to be a spectacle of unity across the globe, but presently, it looks more like an elitist political club.
