Tehri Lake Emerges as India’s Water Sports Hub with National Police Championship
Tehri Lake hosts the All India Police Water Sports Championship, showcasing Uttarakhand’s growing sports infrastructure, adventure tourism, and athlete training ecosystem.

Uttarakhand’s Tehri Lake is once again in the spotlight as it hosts the 25th All India Police Water Sports Cluster, reinforcing the state’s growing identity as a premier destination for adventure sports and high-performance training. Organized by the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), the five-day event brings together 19 teams from across India, featuring over 440 personnel competing in canoeing, kayaking, and rowing disciplines. Set against the scenic reservoir, the championship is not just a sporting event but a strategic push to position Tehri as a national hub for water sports infrastructure and tourism. With Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami inaugurating the event, the initiative aligns with Uttarakhand’s broader vision of leveraging natural assets to build a robust sports ecosystem.
Tehri’s Sports Infrastructure Turns Natural Terrain into Competitive Advantage
The Tehri Lake venue exemplifies how natural geography is being transformed into high-value sports infrastructure. The expansive water body supports multiple race formats, ranging from 200m to 2000m, across canoeing, kayaking, and rowing, enabling large-scale national competitions.
Such infrastructure reduces dependency on artificial facilities while offering athletes real-world competitive conditions. The presence of central armed police forces and state teams further validates Tehri’s capability to host high-intensity, multi-discipline events. This model of integrating natural landscapes with structured sporting events is fast becoming a blueprint for sustainable sports development in hill states.
Tourism, Economy and Sports Development Converge in Uttarakhand
Beyond competition, the event is a catalyst for tourism and local economic growth. With over 6 crore annual visitors and Tehri emerging as a key adventure sports destination, such championships strengthen year-round tourism and employment opportunities.
The collaboration between ITBP and state agencies also reflects a multi-sector approach—linking sports, tourism, and local supply chains. As Uttarakhand continues to host events like water sports clusters, skiing carnivals, and adventure festivals, it is steadily building a diversified sports economy rooted in its natural strengths.
