"The Team Needs to Score, Not You": Thierry Henry Tears Into Cristiano Ronaldo Following Portugal's Shocking World Cup Stumble
France legend Thierry Henry delivered a scathing tactical breakdown of Cristiano Ronaldo's selfish performance during Portugal's 1-1 draw with DR Congo at the 2026 World Cup.

FIFA 2026 World Cup would have been expected to be the platform where Cristiano Ronaldo made his grand statement, as well as the most favoured Portugal. But what happened instead was a very disappointing 1-1 draw for the team in their first match in Group K against DR Congo. But the real shocker here lies not in the game’s result but the scathing comments left by none other than the great Thierry Henry of France.
"Because He Wants to Score"
The game took an excellent start for the European giants with the young midfielder, João Neves, scoring a goal as early as the 6th minute of the match. But after that goal, things became very difficult for the team as DR Congo got their own goal through Yoane Wissa in the dying moments before halftime. Then in the second half of the game, Portugal really needed a hero, but Henry claims that Ronaldo's desire to score made it even more difficult for them.
Appearing on Fox Sports, Henry minced no words in critiquing the Portuguese captain. Critiquing Ronaldo's movements during one particular attacking move in the second half involving João Cancelo and Bruno Fernandes, Henry pointed out how ineffective he had been.
"So, obviously, we're going to see here Portugal being on the ball, Cancelo is going to receive the ball," Henry explained during the broadcast. "If you make that run here, you make the defender decide to crash the six-yard box. But because he wants to score, he doesn't make the right run."
Henry ended his rant with a brutal point of advice to the 41-year-old striker: "One thing that is very important, people, at home, please: we don't need you to score, the team needs to score."
Was the Criticism Deserved?
In situations where a legendary player like Ronaldo is maligned, thousands of his diehard fans instantly come out in support of him. But objectively analyzing the data from the match, Henry’s criticism deserves to be taken seriously.
In a 90-minute game against a much weaker team than themselves, Ronaldo made no significant contributions whatsoever to his side. His tally included a nil number of goals and assists, along with only two shots that did not even threaten the opposition goalkeeper who hails from Congo. In this game, he failed to act as a decoy who creates gaps for the likes of Fernandes and Bernardo Silva.
A former world champion in his own right, Henry knows very well how difficult it is to play down individual achievements for the betterment of the team as a whole. Henry’s criticism makes it abundantly clear that Portuguese footballers are faced with another tactical problem: playing their most talented star could be doing serious damage to their attack. For Portugal to go far at this tournament, the star of the show needs to understand that being part of the squad means putting everything else aside.
Sportscape feels that Henry said these words out of pure love for the sport, and this should be taken as advice rather than criticism. Everyone knows the quality and talent of Cristiano, and we are sure he will bounce back stronger.
