R15 Million Boost Powers Western Cape’s Cricket World Cup Preparations
In a strategic push ahead of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027, South Africa’s Western Cape province has committed a R15 million investment to upgrade key cricket venues, including Newlands Cricket Ground and Boland Park.

Every African country is gearing up its sports preparedness ahead of the African Cup of Nations, specifically the host countries of Kenya (/blog/thika-stadium-upgrade) , [Uganda and Tanzania. Now comes the turn of the southernmost countries of this massive continent. The Western Cape, one of the 9 provinces of the South African subcontinent, is making headlines for announcing significant sports infrastructural developments.
Following the trend of event-led infrastructural developments, the Western Cape government has announced a sanction of R15 million in order to upgrade the cricket facilities of the arena ahead of the ICC Men's World Cup 2027.

What the dignitaries of the sporting world had to say about the investment
Two major areas becoming the anchor of these developments are the Newlands Cricket Ground and Boland Park. The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport has already signed an MoU, while the green signal from the Western Province Cricket Association and Boland Cricket is yet to be formalised to start the process of the developments.
“The Western Cape has shown that we are capable of successfully hosting World Cup events , and we look forward to seeing the Cricket World Cup here next year,” Provincial Minister Ricardo Mackenzie said, referring to preparations for the 2027 tournament.
“These kinds of events help to support our local economy as they not only bring economic investment, but they also support job creation," he further added, emphasising the impacts of large-scale events on the economy of the area.
“This investment strengthens our ability to deliver a memorable World Cup experience for players, fans, and the broader community,” Corrie van Zyl, CEO of the Western Province Cricket Association, said, signalling the significance of the endeavour.
