Zee Entertainment Re-Enters Sports Broadcasting Arena With Four New Channels, FIFA World Cup Talks Underway
Zee Entertainment expands its sports broadcasting portfolio with four new Unite8 Sports channels while holding talks with FIFA for the 2026 World Cup India rights, signalling a major return to live sports media.

India’s sports broadcasting market could be headed for its biggest shake-up in years after Zee Entertainment Enterprisesofficially announced the launch of four new sports channels under its newly created “Unite8 Sports” network, marking the company’s aggressive return to live sports television.
The broadcaster has applied for four channels Unite8 Sports 1, Unite8 Sports 1 HD, Unite8 Sports 2, and Unite8 Sports 2 HD with programming expected across football, cricket, kabaddi, and combat sports. The move positions Zee Entertainment back into a sports broadcasting ecosystem currently dominated by JioStar and Sony Sports Network.
The announcement comes alongside another significant development: Zee Entertainment confirmed that it is currently in discussions with FIFA to acquire the India broadcast and streaming rights for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
According to Reuters, the negotiations arrive at a crucial time after talks between FIFA and the Reliance-Disney joint venture reportedly reached a deadlock over pricing and commercial viability. Industry reports suggest the final India rights package for the 2026 and 2030 FIFA World Cups could now close at nearly $35 million after FIFA revised its earlier valuation expectations.
While Zee has not disclosed financial details of the negotiations, the broadcaster confirmed the discussions in an official statement on Tuesday. The company has also appointed Bavesh Janavlekar as Chief Business Officer for Unite8 Sports, signalling that the venture is being built as a long-term strategic vertical rather than a temporary content expansion.
The launch represents one of the boldest strategic pivots by CEO Punit Goenka in recent years. Goenka has repeatedly spoken about transforming Zee into a future-ready “omni-channel” media company focused on digital growth, technology integration, and diversified content ecosystems.
For Indian viewers, the timing is significant. The sports broadcasting business has become one of the few consistent drivers of mass real-time audiences at a time when entertainment viewership is increasingly fragmented across digital platforms. Football, kabaddi, and combat sports are also witnessing strong engagement from younger audiences, especially on streaming platforms and regional feeds.
The FIFA World Cup rights race further highlights how critical premium sports properties have become for broadcasters looking to expand subscription revenues and advertiser confidence. Zee’s renewed push into sports also comes shortly after the company reported pressure on advertising revenues during its latest quarterly earnings.
If the FIFA deal materialises, it would instantly elevate Zee Entertainment into one of the most influential players in India’s sports broadcasting landscape ahead of the biggest football tournament in history, which will feature 48 teams for the first time across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Sportscape feels that Zee Entertainment’s sports broadcasting expansion is less about launching channels and more about reclaiming relevance in India’s rapidly changing sports economy.
