"APL Will Open Doors to IPL and India Team," Says Himanta Biswa Sarma at League Launch
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma says the Assam Premier League will create pathways for emerging cricketers to reach the IPL and the Indian team.

The Assam Premier League (APL) is set to become a key platform for emerging cricketers in the state, with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarmaexpressing confidence that standout performers could eventually progress to the IPL and even represent India. With APL's league logo, franchise identities, and trophy unveiled at the ACA Stadium in Barsapara, Sarma declared the event would solidify a major landmark in the sports infrastructure development of Assam.
"The Assam Premier League will create a platform for emerging players to demonstrate their skills. Many talented cricketers remain undiscovered due to a lack of exposure, and this league will open doors to IPL and India Team", the Chief Minister said.
Franchise League Model Aims to Expand Talent Pathway
Sarma said organising a state-level franchise competition on the lines of the IPL was a challenging exercise and congratulated the Assam Cricket Association for bringing the project to fruition. He also acknowledged the contribution of franchise owners in helping establish the tournament.
The first season will include the Guwahati Royals, Jorhat Stallions, Tezpur Titans, Dibrugarh Warriors, Nagaon Rangers, Barpeta Braves, Charaideo Sunrisers, and Barak Legends. Organizers say that 160 players were picked out of 400 registered players, showing an increase in local talent options.
Expanded Opportunities Create Exposure
The games will be shown on Star Sports and will be available through streaming on JioHotstar. This allows the young players to gain exposure out of the state. Sarma mentioned that significant improvements have been made in the infrastructure of sports and training in Assam, and that the same importance must be put on developing the players.
What’s Next for Assam’s Cricket?
The Assam Premier League has the potential to be the first step in bridging the gap between the basic skill level of cricket and the higher level of cricket in Assam.
The league has everything needed to provide the players of Assam with their own version of the IPL; Private teams, nationwide televised games, and organized talent programs. If the first season of the league goes well, the APL will be the first step in creating a continuous source of cricket talent from Assam to India.
