Eden Gardens set for renovation by Cricket Association of Bengal with Populous, expanding to 85,750 seats
The iconic Eden Gardens, established in 1864 with legacy ties to the Tata Group, is set for a major post-IPL 2026 transformation aimed at blending heritage with modern innovation.

Built in 1864 with branding from the glorious TATAs, the Eden Gardens Stadium presents an unmatched heritage to India's cricketing industry. The ground witnessed Virat Kohli's 49th ODI century in the ODI World Cup 2023, which is evidence that the heritage still has its spark maintained.
This piece of our history has been decided to undergo a refurbishment right after IPL 2026 streamlined by the Cricket Association of Bengal. The goal is to create a state-of-the-art marvel by facelifting majority aspects of the stadium. Australian architectural firm Populous is spearheading the project.

Detailed Blueprint to the heritage refurbishment
The seating capacity of the facility is being targeted to be increased to 85,750 seats. This is being done by a phased renovation of the standing blocks. Blocks B, C, K, and L shall be retained with minor lifting, with Blocks A, D, E, F, G, H, and J undergoing complete demolition overhaul. This ambitious target shall be carried out in two phases, with E and F, half of the J blocks' renovation in phase 1, followed by the remaining blocks in phase 2.
The stadium is being developed along major scientific calculations, including climatic oversight, which includes sun path and wind rose analysis. This shall be carried out to study the shadows being formed on the pitch with special emphasis on the shadow of K block. C-value heat map studies are being conducted to provide an unobstructed view to viewers across the entire facility.
Attention is also being given to the corporate boxes complemented with dining spaces and VIP lounges. In order to keep the stadium sustainable all year round, for non-match days there is a plan spread across 5264 m to include a sports museum, a members' Club, retail merchandise shops, and a 260-square-meter digital experience club, center.
