Shillong Meet Drives Sports Infrastructure Push Ahead of National Games 2027
Under the leadership of Conrad K. Sangma and senior officials like Vijay Kumar D., stakeholders including the Sports & Youth Affairs Department and Meghalaya State Olympic Association evaluated the state’s expanding infrastructure ecosystem.

In the sports surge of the Northeast, Shillong is playing a dominant role with the recent St. Mary's sports facility inauguration by CM Conrad K. Sangma. In order to run a holistic review about the state's sports infrastructure, a meeting was called ahead of the National Games 2027.
High-level officials from Shillong, constituting the Sports & Youth Affairs Department and the Meghalaya State Olympic Association, gathered to discuss the preparations for the 39th National Games scheduled to be held in Meghalaya in 2027.

Constituency of the review meet
Dr. Vijay Kumar D., I.A.S., Commissioner and Secretary of the Department of Sports & Youth Affairs for the Government of Meghalaya, and the Monitoring Committee officials were the meeting incharges to check for the competency of the sports infrastructure made by the Sports Associations of Meghalaya.
Flagship state projects and allocations in sports infrastructure
The primary vision of the conversation revolved around topics like building infrastructure, such as AI-powered turf fields, finalizing event locations in Shillong, Tura, and Jowai, and making sure that all teams are well-trained for the event.The state has numerous ongoing projects like the Mawkhanu Football Stadium, the Umiam Sailing/C&K Facility, and a lot of athletic tracks.
The government has allocated more than ₹1,900 crore to these projects to build 50 artificial turfs, making it one of the maximum benchmarks in India.As for its own team selection, the state is conducting a rigorous search amongst 8 teams on categories of how efficiently they train and how well they eat. For accommodation purposes, the local hotels and homestays are being targeted to host the varied guest list.
