Shreyas Iyer To Lose Captaincy To Shubman Gill? Report Suggests Major Leadership Changes After Asian Games
Shreyas Iyer was recently appointed as the skipper of the Indian men's T20 team but it appears that Shubman Gill can be called upon to take over the charge after Asian Games.

India announced its squad for the UK tour. The men in blue will play two T20Is against Ireland on June 26 and 28. A five-T20I series and three ODIs will follow the Ireland tour. This will be the first time Team India is taking on the field after the T20 World Cup title. Former World Cup-winning captain Suryakumar Yadav could not make it to the squad, and Shreyas Iyer has been handed the charge. But it appears that Gautam Gambhir and team management are still stuck with the captaincy lingo. According to Revsports, the selection committee is considering bringing back ODI and Test captain Shubman Gill to lead the team in the shortest format of the game as well.
According to the report, the committee sees Shreyas Iyer as an ad-hoc captain. He is expected to lead the team until the Asian Games in September-October. This has come as a shock to everyone because, during a press conference earlier this month, chief selector Ajit Agarkar himself signalled that they are considering Iyer for the 2028 Olympics and T20 World Cup.
Why the Sudden Change?
Although there is no official confirmation from either the BCCI or the selection committee, the reason speculated for this change can be termed ‘uniformity’. By bringing in Gill as the captain, Agarkar and Gambhir want uniformity in the team across all formats. Gill's recent performances across all formats can also be considered one of the reasons for this change. During the test match against Afghanistan, the 26-year-old scored 126 runs and led the team to victory. He then carried his form to the 50-over format, where he smashed a total of 238 runs in just two games, including the 154-run knock in the second ODI.
Gill’s Impressive Resume
Gill’s experience and resume as a T20 captain have been witnessed by everyone during the IPL. Initially, he joined the franchise from its inaugural season in 2022 as a player but took over the captaincy duties in 2024 after a staggering 2023 season where he amassed 890 runs. Under his captaincy, GT finished at the 3rd spot in 2025 while missing the title in the finals against RCB in 2026.
