Ski Mountaineering Championship Ignites Arunachal’s Winter Sports Ambitions
Arunachal Pradesh is carving its place on India’s winter sports map through its first-ever national ski mountaineering championship, an initiative led by Pema Khandu that is set to significantly boost interest in snow sports across the state.

The Land of the Rising Sun is now witnessing the rising of the dominant winter sports in the state. While Ladakh and Jammu grab all the attention for winter sports due to their favorable terrain and climate feasibility, Arunachal is also stepping up to develop its winter games infrastructure.

He also announced a ski and onboarding training program simultaneously to give impetus to winter sports promotion in the area. The goal behind the project has been multifaceted, attracting tourists to this evolving winter destination while also providing the much-needed push for the budding athletes of the winter games genre.

Nature's gift to the state
The natural ecosystem present in the eastern end of the country makes it very conducive to sow the seed of winter sports. The Himalayan terrain, complemented by regions like Tawang, Sela Pass, and Dirang that receive heavy rainfall, sweetens the pot for three states' ambitions. The only institute providing professional training in mountaineering and other adventure sports is based in the very own Dirang region of the state. This makes it all the more feasible to evolve its winter-sports-anchored development.
Event-led state sports transformation
The championship shall aid the overall growth of the state sports ecosystem with the construction of athletic tracks in Tawang & Jang & Zemithang.Khandu described the development as “a historic first," calling it the beginning of structured snow sports activities in the region. He added that the initiative could open new opportunities for local athletes while strengthening the state’s position as an emerging winter tourism destination. With the CM having recently announced a 25000 seater football stadium, Arunchal is making its way to the top.
