Tunku Ismail urges Malaysia to fix infrastructure gaps before chasing FIFA World Cup dream
Tunku Ismail in his recent address voiced for large-scale infrastructure changes if the nation wants to host global tournaments.

Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim, Johor Darul Ta’zim Owner and Regent of Johor, in a recent statement, said that Malaysia should abandon its ambitions of hosting the FIFA World Cup until the core issues around infrastructure and pitch quality are resolved.
Ismail remarked that Johor has the potential to host the FIFA World Cup in the future, only if sustained investment and development in the sports infrastructure sector continue.
During his address at the Orang Muda Johor programme, Tunku Ismail mentioned the state's access to strong economic backing and consistent improvements in sports infrastructure; however, facilities are insufficient to host tournaments at the global stage. Further mentioning his repeated demand for a surface change, Tunku Ismail reflected on administrative inefficiencies.
Ismail noted that Johor has several advantages, including modern facilities and experience hosting international events such as the 2025 Influencer World Cup. Yet the country needs to upgrade its stadium infrastructure and other facilities before aspiring to host the FIFA World Cup.
Sportscape views Tunku Ismail’s remarks as a reflection of the state of infrastructure in Malaysia. The remarks come in comparison to other smaller nations, like Qatar, which successfully hosted major tournaments like the FIFA World Cup.
